Agree entirely morningpaper. The swasticka ananology came up then - a good point made IMO.

katz · 22/05/2008 19:19

well said morning paper, i was going to make the same point but couldn't find the words

IIRC he said that targeting children is "grooming them as consumers in the sex industry" which is a fair point surely?

southeastastra · 22/05/2008 19:23

why do i keep singing vicar in a tutu, it's so inappropriate for this thread but i can't get it out of my head.

chegirl · 22/05/2008 19:26

I was so thrilled to see this guy on tv this am. I have been ranting about this for ages and just getting blank stares! Apart from the fact that these objects are totally inapropriate for child, they are also funding the porn industry.

I have felt for a while now that our society is rapidly moving backwards when it comes to teaching our girls respect for themselves. When I was a teenager if a boy called me a whore or a bitch he would have got a knee in the bollocks. twenty years later girls expect it! Its like feminism never happened!

I agree that it does not take a genius to make the connection between this stuff and our girls thinking its acceptable to see them selves as mere objects for the gratification of men.

A lot of my friends are 10-15 years younger than me and they give me one of those 'she is off again' looks if I dare talk about this stuff!
GRRRRRR

Greyriverside · 22/05/2008 19:28

When I said "we should keep it in perspective" I meant the vicar and some posters should because I am able to keep these things in perspective with no effort whatsoever.

The following quote makes my point for me.

It's not hard to spot a connection between ten year old girls with the Playboy bunny on their pencil cases, to 14 year old girls who think they have to sexually service their boyfriends to 18 year olds who end up dancing in lap-dancing clubs becuase they think it's a valid career and then end up with a bad case of PTSD because of the sexual abuse they suffer in those places.>>

Really? I rest my case.

posieparker · 22/05/2008 19:28

Perhaps we could all start by just noticing and posting who's selling it, template a letter and send it off. Start a thread for each stockist and contact local/national media to report on our online campaign.....anyone fancy starting a facebook page???

morningpaper · 22/05/2008 19:30

Erm sorry Greyriver what IS your case?

Are you sayign that it's ok to sell products with logos of porn empires to children?

fryalot · 22/05/2008 19:31

count me in for whatever group you start up. Tis vile and 'orrible and shouldn't be sold to kids (or anyone for that matter...)

NoBiggy · 22/05/2008 19:32

You rest your case by just saying "really"?

Good for him! we have had this debate on MN countless times. I am firmly in the anti-pornification-of-everything-in-society brigade. From porn star t-shirts for kids to the normalisation of brazilian waxes. (I'm not anti-waxing, don't get me wrong, but I am aware i am probably in a minority for never having had a pubic area wax, which is kind of weird
I don't have a dd but I cannot fathom why people want to line Hugh Heffner's pockets even more.

fryalot · 22/05/2008 19:37

me neither FMF - and am equally sure I am never going to have one

I'll join in the WHSmith action if there is one. How about we all do it on the same day?

Blandmum · 22/05/2008 19:39

I loath the 'normalisation' of pronography in this way. I find it deeply offenisve that children are adding to the weath of an organisation of this sort. It is as vile and nasty and tacky as the 'my little hooker' outfits that are sold to young girls

pooka · 22/05/2008 19:41

It is blindingly obvious that children are incredibly sensitive to advertising and branding. DS saw a picture dd had done with birds in "m" shapes and he said Macdonalds. He's nearly 3. Having a brand or logo that is easily recognisable is nirvana for companies. I think it is highly offensive and inappropriate for the playboy branded bunny to be placed on items aimed, either directly or just because of where they are displayed within a store, at children.

However laissez faire I might feel about playboy consumption among adults, the idea that children are absorbing the brand and image without awareness of the reality of the business behind it is repellent to me.

sfxmum · 22/05/2008 19:42

fully support any action against such marketing

posieparker · 22/05/2008 19:43

Only thing about starting a facebook page is my real name would be on it, wouldn't it??

PuppyMonkey · 22/05/2008 19:43

My dd1 (11 years) was keen on a Playboy pencil case, so i told her it was porn stuff and she now makes a point of warning all her chums not to get it.

oxocube · 22/05/2008 19:43

I see little girls at school in Playboy sweatshirts - they are 9 and 10 years old. I really cannot understand why their parents who are intelligent, lovely people, see nothing wrong in it. To me, its the same as kids wearing a tee-shirt promoting booze, drugs or cigarettes - a life choice one can make as an adult, but totally inappropriate for children.

katz · 22/05/2008 19:44

greyriver - do you think its ok for an 8 year old girl to wear playboy bunny earrings with her matching t-shirt, have a playboy bunny pencil case filled with playboy branded pens, pencils and rulers?
