Which newspaper?

I really don't get why everyone hates the DM and thinks those that read it are a bit

I am looking to buy a paper each day and interested in what the general opinion is on which paper mostly prints the truth.

The Telegraph.

NotABanana · 17/04/2008 18:33

I used to nanny for someone who worked on that paper.

They are all biased.

You just accept the bias you tend to agree with and go from there.

I have just` read Flat Earth News by Nick Davies which gives some pretty compelling reasons to hate the Daily Mail. They are not really that interested in the truth.

LyraSilvertongue · 17/04/2008 18:34

The Daily Mirror because DP writes for them. It's not at all highbrow but not too downmarket like the Sun or the Star.

Minum · 17/04/2008 18:36

I love the Times, the quality of the opinion writers is excellent, and Times2 does great lifestyle/fashion/ranting etc

The sports writing has moved me to tears after big events, it so sums up what I feel

constancereader · 17/04/2008 18:41

I like the opinion writers in The Times too as you tend to get very varied pov. The arts coverage is crap compared to The Guardian though, but I don't like the rest of the Guardian much.

NotABanana · 17/04/2008 18:42

I am interested in trying the Times now. Thanks.

What is it about the DM? Do they just print rubbish, is that it?

LyraSilvertongue · 17/04/2008 18:43

At least they're not as racist as The Express. Every day the splash is about immigrants ruining the country.

bringmesunshine · 17/04/2008 18:45

May I suggest you buy The Times and The Telegraph on Saturday and see which you prefer. We get both as DH likes Times but I am a huge fan of The Telegraph. Crossword is a bugger though

moondog · 17/04/2008 18:47

Torygraph.
At least not whingeing left wing luvvie nonsense as spouted by Guardian (on a bad day.On a good day, it's fine.)

beansmum · 17/04/2008 18:49

I love the Guardian on a Saturday, wouldn't be the weekend without it. I read it every weekday as well. I buy it anyway, don't always read every word...

GentleOtter · 17/04/2008 19:02

I would have recommended the Scotsman but God only knows where they get their journalists from these days.

Jazzicatz · 17/04/2008 19:04

Has to be The Guardian.

MaryAnnSingleton · 17/04/2008 19:04

I like The Times and sometimes the Guardian on Saturday (for Charlie Brooker mainly)

constancereader · 17/04/2008 19:05

pmsl at whinging left wing luvvie nonsense - I was trying to be so tactful with my anti Guardian comment.

The Daily Mail will lie and not care because they have enough money to intimidate other people into not taking them on. They don't care about ruining lives and reputations as long as the story fits their agenda.

The Telegraph gets off lightly in the Nick Davies book, perhaps I should move to that?

LyraSilvertongue · 17/04/2008 19:07

As well as the Mirror we have the Times, Guardian, Sun and Mail delivered every day. DP and I have to read a broad range of papers for work.
I can recommend the Times.

Mercy · 17/04/2008 19:09

The truth?!

Dh's favourite newpaper is the International Herald Tribune.

I have more or less given up reading tbh.

twinsetandpearls · 17/04/2008 19:09

Usually guardian if something catches my eye i will pick up the independent. Our local coffee bar has the mail which i will read if i ever start to forget that we still live in a very unjust even cruel world.

LyraSilvertongue · 17/04/2008 19:10

Oh, we get the Indy too. I've never once read it.

constancereader · 17/04/2008 19:31

I don't like the Independent. It is really sanctimonious imo.

Blandmum · 17/04/2008 19:33

When we get a newspaper we get the Times.

Its a habit I got into as a student and never threw it off.

Don't like the Grauniad.

Independent is good when it isn't 'trying too hard' to be 'different' IYSWIM

Stargazer · 17/04/2008 19:33

We read the Indy for news and The Star for gossip and trash!! Got it covered all round

NotABanana · 17/04/2008 19:36

Bringmesunshine - oh, to have time and energy to do a crossword!!

OP posts:
SquonkTheBeerGuru · 17/04/2008 19:39

I get the gruniad.

Because I like G2 and the crossword and sudoku are good.

And it makes me feel worthy

Monkeybird · 17/04/2008 19:44

NotABanana: surely no newspaper prints the truth? And do you really not get why some people don't like the DM?

FWIW I would have to give up MN if I read a newspaper. I used to, in the old days, have the Grauniad and sometimes the Independent but found it a bit up itself. Torygraph has excellent sport but cannot bring myself to buy it and still hate Rupert Murdoch so not the Times. [though have Sky so principles out the window and can thus now buy it... hmmm]
