I really don't get why everyone hates the DM and thinks those that read it are a bit

I am looking to buy a paper each day and interested in what the general opinion is on which paper mostly prints the truth.

guardian, and times on saturday.

Another DM hater here I'm afraid.

NotABanana · 17/04/2008 19:54

All I ever hear on here is that everyone hates them but I have never seen anything specific about what they do wrong.

That sounds like a challenge NAB...

Islamum · 17/04/2008 19:56

The dm will give you reasons to be scared coz everyone is out to get you , young people, immigrants, single mums, europe, teachers even, big pile of tosh which actually contains little 'news' What makes it really scarry though is that its readers believe that its the gospel truth (tragically my gran is one of them) I like the indy myself, though the sun is sometimes fun

nickytwotimes · 17/04/2008 19:59

I'm a Gruniad lass myself. Like the Squonkster, I love G2 and it also reflects my political views.

FairyMum · 17/04/2008 20:02

I read The Times on my way to work, The Evening standard on my way from work and sometimes DM online for a laugh.

Currently on mat leave so reading whatever the cat brings in.

bringmesunshine · 17/04/2008 20:04

NotABanana - I normally stare at the crossword over my toast for 2 minutes in the morning and promise myself that come the weekend I will complete it even if I have to lock myself in a room for the entire duration.....I then do 2 clues, give up and forget about it

BugBearisBugBear · 17/04/2008 20:10

Times is my fav, fond of the Times 2

Guardian reads to me as if it's been written by a bunch of students.

petetong · 17/04/2008 20:21

I'm a daily mail reader. It has some good stories. You don't have to believe everything that you read. They have interesting articles such as pointing out that binge drinking in the young is because they have no hope of buying a house so have large disposable income. They have some good, informative arcticles. Some of their articles are shit, but I am intelligent enough to pick out the bits I believe and the bits I don't. Absolutely all newspapers have their own slant and aren't all truthful.

saltire · 17/04/2008 20:24

We used to read the Scotsman when in Scotland and liked it. Not pages and pages of celebrities doing thier shooping and things like that.
We can't get it down here, being almost in france. We are currently reading the Daily Ranger Record, it being the only Scottish paper we can get, but we are thinking of changing, don't know what to though

franke · 17/04/2008 20:24

In answer to your question nab, I personally dislike the DM because of the amount of vitriol levelled against women - and I only ever really see the online version, so can filter much of it out. On the rare occasions that I see a hard copy I am always shocked at the amount of unrelenting hate which comes out of its pages.

talilac · 17/04/2008 20:25

What about something like "The Week" - a news digest magazine?

petetong · 17/04/2008 20:29

Sorry franke, can you give me an example of vitriol levelled against women.

Kevlarhead · 17/04/2008 20:47

Wasn't it just a few weeks ago the Mail ran a story accusing a red-haired, pale skinned member of Girls Aloud [not sure about the group] of "Sun Snobbery" for not getting a brown/tango coloured tan like the rest of her group. The article ran on and on, accusing her of getting above herself, and implying she was trying to be 'posh', entirely ignoring the fact that people with that sort of pale skin DON'T BLOODY TAN and do the highly unattractive burn-peel-repeat thing instead... generated a long thread on here I recall.

Personally I read (on-line, 'cos I'm skint) the Guardian, balancing it with the Times. Also read the Sunday Herald at the weekends because it is top quality (and not Murdoch owned).

petetong · 17/04/2008 20:52

Sorry, didn't see that.

Kevlarhead · 17/04/2008 20:59

It was a while ago. I can't even find it now.

Here's the original!

beaniesteve · 17/04/2008 21:03

I read the Guardian, The Observer and the mirror. I basically don't believe anything I read in the Mirror but it's cheaper than buying OK! Magazine

I've seen a few people salg off Guardian readers as being liberal do-gooders but I think I do trust it more than I trust something like the Daily Mail or the 'Daily Heil' as my friends call it! I just don't like the way it 'Daily mail' always plays the immigrant/paedo/single-mother/Terror/dole-scrounger card.

LyraSilvertongue · 17/04/2008 21:11

Beaniesteve, Mirror journos don't just make stuff up. DP's a Mirror writer.

WendyWeber · 17/04/2008 21:27

petetong, "pointing out that binge drinking in the young is because they have no hope of buying a house so have large disposable income" - surely you jest?

When I was young houses were infinitely affordable, but we still binge-drank because that's what young people do

taipo · 17/04/2008 21:38

I live abroad now so catch up on news from home by reading a variety of papers online and by reading 'in the news' threads on MN

Used to get the Guardian [whingeing leftie/bleeding heart liberal emoticon]

southeastastra · 17/04/2008 21:41

i buy the guardian for the bit in the middle, especially charlie brooker.

i get the mail and express on monday and tuesday because it keeps my visiting mil really quiet

stripeymama · 17/04/2008 21:41

Get the Guardian nearly every day and the Observer on Sundays.

petetong · 17/04/2008 22:01

Yes, yes, most of us have done the binge drinking. My point is that most of us also grew up and moved on from it and bought a house to raise our families in. The way I see it, there isn't much hope of that happening now.

beaniesteve · 17/04/2008 22:12

Apologies LyraSilvertongue

lovecat · 17/04/2008 22:57

Guardian daily, Observer on Sunday.

Standard on Mon-Weds for tube home, it's fun watching them desperately trying to make Boris Johnston electable...

And a co-worker's Sun at lunchtimes for celeb trash gossip. I like to be balanced.

Our newsagents is weird though. If the Grauniad isn't available, they send us the DM... why??? Surely the INdy's got to be a more viable alternative?

But it is fun reading it occasionally.. like peeking over your strange next-door-neighbour's fence to see what life's like in their world!
