Just been flicking through the threads. The Daily Mail is a racist, sexist and unintellectual piece of s**t. The issue is not whether Miss England is too fat or not, but that a paper would report on such insignificant twoddle when there are far more interesting things happening in the world and class themselves within the realms of journalism. Rant over

nah, wota, having good taste in one's reading material isn't bigoted. It's just well...having good taste.

and the prob. with reading shoite like DM is that some people consume it as if it was true, and use it to give creedence to their nasty little views, which then the rest of us endure in various situations. Si ti does affect us all in some and various ways.

donnie · 09/04/2008 17:15

the DM got into hot water recently over its abnormal and fanatical anti-Polish stance ; there had been something like 100 stories with 'Poles' or 'Polish blah blah' in their headlines in the space of a few months which some organisation or other took offence to and reported them to the press complaints commission - sorry sounds vague but I don't recall the precise details. I did read it in the Guardian though so it must be true...! maybe someone can find a link..... Basically the DM was said to be conducting some kind of witch hunt against Polish people.

But like others say, hardly news is it? these anti DM threads may be a yawn but they are also funny.

The problem with papers is that they become quite important when there are trifling things like Elections...

The comments on the BBC show regarding GB's first PMQ's directly aimed at, I quote, the DM reader... trying to win the DM vote...

I suppose the other thing to look at is that circulation isn't the only indicator - most people now get their news online..

donnie · 09/04/2008 17:24

have just checked the story , one of the headlines the federation objected to was ' POLISH HOMOSEXUALS IN MASS EXODUS TO THE UK or something very like it. I can't do links but I did a google on daily mail polish complaints and it came up.

what choice is there for pensioners then, i'm thankful that the dm keeps mil quiet for at least 3 hours whilst she's here.

Wotalot... I don't appreciate being called a bigot...

What papers and other periodicals people really read is a good indicator of what they are all about and what makes them tick...

My parents love the DM and regularly rant against immigrants, single mums etc just because they really believe everything they read in the paper. They think I am a real lefty as I read the Guardian, so I guess it's just a left v right thing, and I guess we are lucky that we have freedom of press for that debate.

Quattrocento · 09/04/2008 18:19

"so I guess it's just a left v right thing"

It's more than left v extreme right though isn't it? There's something about intelligence and educational attainment too. I once read that the Sun deliberately designed its writing for people with a reading age of 9/10. The DM must be at most a year ahead of that.

Left vs right in the former broadsheets would be Guardian vs Telegraph wouldn't it? It would never be Guardian vs DM

wotaloadofbigots - I am not nasty or bigoted. I rally didn't realise my post would cause such a stir . Yes we are all entitled to read what we like and have our own opinions and I am not suggesting Daily Mail readers should stop just because of me. But the Daily Mail IS racist and I can't tolerate racism of any kind. It is cruel and an affront to human rights.
