Daily Mail utter s**t

roseability · 06/04/2008 21:07

Just been flicking through the threads. The Daily Mail is a racist, sexist and unintellectual piece of s**t. The issue is not whether Miss England is too fat or not, but that a paper would report on such insignificant twoddle when there are far more interesting things happening in the world and class themselves within the realms of journalism. Rant over

The DM is shit.
There will probably be posters defending it.
But I am right.

TvGoHome had 'Daily Mail Island' a castaway clone where normal people were sent to an island where the only reading material was the Daily Mail.

It was fairly hit and miss, but the entry that always sticks with me concerned one of the teenagers from the community, who shocked the other residents when she was caught masturbating.

"The community has to decide whether to simply accept it and move on; or imprison her inside a coffin full of broken glass and dogshit, and hurl her off a cliff into the sea."

It's funny because it's true...

Panino · 08/04/2008 00:26

and Mumsnet is full of women!! They're everywhere, discussing child-rearing, relationships, men, dress sense, music and employment issues. And the Daily Mail is shite.

All news just in.

waffletrees · 08/04/2008 10:20

Daily Mail really is a load of wank!! The scary thing is that some people accept everything it prints as gospel.

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 08/04/2008 10:25

It's turgid, horrible reading but the more worrying thing is that there is a firm base of support for it and its values and opinions it prints....

Carmenere · 08/04/2008 10:28

And this is news??

artichokes · 08/04/2008 10:31

I totally agree.

I have posted this before but don't mind repeating muself... a recent book about the state of modern journalism, by an author called Nick Davies, has many horror stories about the DM's appraoch. One that made my was the Editor hearing about a murder of an elderly couple in their beds. He was pleased to find a story that tied in with his papers line that Britiain is in the crips of a terrible crime wave, decent middle England is in danger, none of us are safe in our beds etc etc etc. Therefore he sent a team of journalists up to Midlands to cover the story. After they had boarded the train they got a call from the Editor to disembark at the next station. Why? He had found out that the murdered couple were not white - the DM were no longer intending in covering the story at all.

MrsMattie · 08/04/2008 10:32

We wouldn't wipe our arses with it in our house.

WanderingTrolley · 08/04/2008 10:34

I love the Daily Mail. It makes me hoot. I don't believe it to be a serious newspaper, however, I just enjoy going Hahahahaha that's such a load of shit. It rarely offends me because I have such little respect for it.

All papers are full of insignificant twoddle because that's what sells.

Where's that link to the DM headline generator?

WanderingTrolley · 08/04/2008 10:35

Here

doggiesayswoof · 08/04/2008 10:35

That is a great book artichokes. Flat Earth News - is that right? Shocking stuff.

southeastastra · 08/04/2008 10:36

the tv guide magazine is good, also nice animal pics

Carmenere · 08/04/2008 10:36

Well I do agree that it is a bit like a comic for adults, I occasionally read it if it is free on a flight or in a coffee shop. The idea that people seriously use it as their main source of news is terrifying.

I hear they pay good freelance rates though................

edam · 08/04/2008 10:37

I think the Daily Mail attitude that the country is full of benefit cheats might be responsible for some of the bile directed at Shannon Matthew's family. Loads of people are moaning about 'their taxes' supporting them, despite the fact that the stepfather actually has a job and must therefore pay tax. As if there isn't enough ammunition to throw at them ? should you feel the need ? some people jump to the conclusion that they are cheats living a life of luxury at the taxpayers' expense.

Enid · 08/04/2008 10:38

kevlarhead

I remember Daily Mail Island

hilarious

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 08/04/2008 10:39

I thought the main source of printed news was the red tops (if circulation is anything to go by)

Alternatives to DM??

myalias · 08/04/2008 10:40

Best bit about it is the readers comments

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 08/04/2008 10:42

Edam - DM just adds the fuel to the fire - all the papers are at it - the last comment in the Sun today after reporting their take on the SM case was the fact that this case has cost the police £5 million to search..

All research done on-line of course... don't use my benefits to pay for red tops...!!

Enid · 08/04/2008 10:43

free yourselves!

I havent bought or read a newspaper for years

fantastic

dh read the Sun at my sisters house and was

he was so freaked out he couldnt stop talking about it

artichokes · 08/04/2008 10:49

No1Erma - only the Sun has a bigger daily readership than the Daily Mail now. The Sun is rapdily losing readership while the DM is one of the very few national papers that is gaining readers (it has gained 18% more readers in the last 15 years, the Sun has lost 20%).

The terrifying statistic is that if you add the daily readership of the Times, Guardian and Telegraph it is still less than the DM.

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 08/04/2008 10:52

Those are frightening figures artichoke....

iloatheironing · 08/04/2008 10:54

I sometimes buy the dm because I like the puzzle pages in the middle. Glance through the rest except sports pages which I always read cause I like football. Does anyone ever truely believe anything they read in the papers? I take it all with a pinch of salt
