"The Home Office will launch a surprise operation to detain asylum seekers across the UK on Monday in preparation for deportation to Rwanda, weeks earlier than expected, the Guardian understands.
Officials plan to hold refugees who turn up for routine meetings at immigration service offices and will also pick people up nationwide in a two-week exercise.

They will be immediately transferred to detention centres, which have already been prepared for the operation, and held to be put on later flights to Rwanda. Others identified for these flights are already being held."

I am actually shocked by this. A cruel, inhumane action with terrible optics and a colossal waste of money.

Seems immigration services are finally taking a proactive approach to the situation, about time. Let's hope flights will take off and not be met with further legal challenges

Well, er, I'm guessing they won't be turning up now then......

That's appalling. My DCs are friends with asylum seekers (not in the UK). They are just young people like any other. I fully expect sickening stories about human rights abuses from the Rwandan prisons they end up in, if the flights can't be stopped.

VeraForever · 28/04/2024 14:00

No good will come of this .

If they don't turn up for their fortnightly signing, they will be tracked down and detained or deported. So there's no way to evade this.

QuintanaRoo · 28/04/2024 14:01

Interesting. Can’t imagine many will turn up for their meetings on Mon.

there is a big immigration centre just been sorted a couple of miles from me. Space for 2000 men, all in portacabins. 😢. The publicity has said it will be an open centre, so free to come and go, catch the bus into town, etc. I wonder if they will lock them up there now instead? Because otherwise who would stay there knowing you’ll be put on a plane to Africa any minute.

the govt are desperate to get this done before an election

Longcovider · 28/04/2024 14:02

It's absolutely horrendous.

Not necessarily, some will simply disappear in to the black economy.

Alright Nigel.

alloweraoway · 28/04/2024 14:03

If this is true, this is evil. People will be afraid to come for their legal meetings, What then?

and why is it them not you? pure accident.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/04/2024 14:04

Oh, so he's about to announce a General Election, then.

Bumblebeeinatree · 28/04/2024 14:14

What do the anti Rwanda people want to do with all the asylum seekers and all the ones arriving soon?

I thought it was bonkers initially, but the accommodation in Rwanda looks really nice and a new start in a new country doesn't seem that awful compared with staying in horrible accommodation in the UK indefinitely, and facing hostile locals wherever they are dumped around the country. A hotel was converted for asylum seekers in our local town and I was amazed by the antagonism from local, I thought civilised people.

Labour seem to be going with send them back to France, but would the French accept them back? And wouldn't they just be on the next boat back to the UK.

Or we declare open borders and let everyone in who wants to come and what are the consequences of that?

Well, quite.

Though of course, and I'm sure I speak for all of us here, at least we can be assured that the very minute all of these refugees and asylum seekers are finally removed from our green and pleasant land, every single issue blighting our country including, but not limited to, the cost of living, the NHS, education, social care, poverty, VAWG, anti social behaviour etc etc, will simply disappear - poooft! Because they're definitely, definitely the cause of them all! Thank God our valiant and brave leaders are finally ridding us of this scourge! Hurrah!

(deep, deep sarcasm)

I reckon. Once he gets that first plane off the ground. Expect an election announcement shortly after.

Figgygal · 28/04/2024 14:17

Rishi got to get those plane seats filled somehow hasn't he
Hope labour scraps the whole bloody disgrace

What's your plan?

Stichintime · 28/04/2024 14:20

The Tories love dehumanising and demonising people, to take the focus off their corruption. I'm sad that people on this country still fall for this facisit shit.

Agreed.

A government who have done zero to contribute to the health and well-being of this country (apart from their cronies) once against brutalising and trying to criminalise the most vulnerable.
Quell Surprise

For what? Fixing the cost of living, the NHS, education, social care, poverty, VAWG, anti social behaviour etc? Vote for someone other than the inhumane Tories I expect. Yours?

Ilikewinter · 28/04/2024 14:24

Not a surprise now its been announced in the press though is it.

If Rwanda is so nice then why do we grant asylum to people from Rwanda? Confused

VeryQuaintIrene · 28/04/2024 14:26

I hate them for what they've done to this country, and for this, and I hope they are wiped out at the next election.
