In short. Hamas are a terrorist group which are in charge of Gaza and they launched an unprecedented terror attack Israel on Saturday killing people at a music concert and making their way across the country taking hostages and bringing them back to Gaza. Horrific stories of violence - 1,300 dead. It’s unprecedented because of Israel’s excellent security systems. In retaliation Isreal are carpet bombing the 2.2 million residents in Gaza, and have blocked off access to electricity, food, medicine. Nothing or nobody goes in or out. Reports that the hospitals are over flowing with the injured - 1,500 dead. That’s just what happened in the last few days, obviously the story didn’t start on Saturday.

It’s a fight for land as it always is.

The Israelites believe the land is their Holy Land and rightfully theirs because of them historically living on the land and being forced out by various civilisations/regimes. The Palestinians believe the land was stolen from them post WW2 and they won’t accept land sharing. They want the Jewish settlers gone.

Thank you, awful 😔

Very simply, religion is the cause. It is, and always will be, the most horrific and murderous thing a sentient species ever invented. It’s embedded itself into politics and history and culture over a few milennia, but it all comes down to one side believing their made up magic bearded wizard chose them over the other side, who believe exactly the same about themselves.

Challengingtimesnow · 12/10/2023 22:23

A newspaper for children has published this. I had to look to find something age-appropriate for her because I couldn’t understand it either, OP.

Thank you for this. A previous thread on the same subject quickly descended into bashing the OP about their lack of education!

merrymelodies · 13/10/2023 05:08

It's such a complex and divisive issue; hard to unravel because of bias.

saffronsoup · 13/10/2023 05:15

This is a short factual video created before the most recent crisis that goes over the basics of the history that led up to now

Thankyou for this post! I didn't understand either. I tried to read the news to find out but couldn't understand what it was all about. I don't follow the news but just hear snippets and it is just dreadful :-(

If you have the time, this is one of the most balanced, factual and nuanced summaries I've seen of the history of the conflict:

I was coming on here to recommend this, it really is good.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/10/2023 06:15

Thank you for asking OP. I have a hard time getting my head round it all too.

I was coming to recommend the same podcast 😊. I found it informative and clear.

Haribosweets · 13/10/2023 06:32

I'm the same OP and I don't understand either. Thank you to another poster for making it clearer. I sometimes read newsround for children when I don't understand something in the news

Hidingawaytoday · 13/10/2023 06:47

The BBC have also posted this article, which helped explain it to me this morning: www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-44124396

If you prefer to listen to something The Rest is Politics podcast (and also the relevant bit is on their Tiktok) have quite a good explanation.

Bleepbloopbluurp · 13/10/2023 07:01

Oh, I see I have been beaten to it! Well, it was good!

Does Rory explain the background of Israel in his podcast? That's the bit I find complicated Sad
What a devastating situation it is.

App1es · 13/10/2023 07:08

This is an excellent, simple guide. I found after discussion on another thread and found it very informative indeed.

Always worth reading a précis of the history of war propaganda before watching anything on the BBC or Sky or reading any British newspaper on any war.

This is not a bad overview.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atrocity_propaganda

The way to justify any military action is to paint the others as barbaric, bestial, cruel and subhuman.

Yesterday we heard a lot about baby slaughter and foetuses ripped from mothers' wombs. Exactly the lurid stories published about the Irish to justify Cromwell's massacre of them. Or the "babies in incubator" fake testimony about Iraq. Or Napoleon bayoneting babies. Or...

Yes he does, and that's what people need to understand I think. He's always been very knowledgeable on this subject

Watch the clip I posted above from History on Maps. It is a graphic telling using maps and icons that makes it quite easy to follow and gives you the basics. You can then go to other sources to add to that knowledge.
