This is horrific. 21 year old woman and her baby both dead.

I mean - surely you would take the car license number and let the person drive off - it's hardly a matter for shooting someone dead!

They don't seem to issue any common sense with guns to these absolute idiots.

Body camera footage shows an officer fatally shooting a pregnant Black woman in the parking lot of a grocery store after she refused to exit her car and instead bumped him with her vehicle in Blendon Township, Ohio, U.S. August 24, 2023 in this still...

Ohio police release video of fatal shooting of pregnant Black woman

The family of the 21-year-old woman, Ta'Kiya Young, demanded for the officer who fired the fatal shot to be held accountable.

The amount of victim blaming and attempts at justification, for what is murder, on this thread is disgusting.

This is MN remember, where anyone who isn’t white is public enemy number one.

While a very sad outcome, this women drove at a police officer. Sure he could have moved, but why should he have to let a criminal escape? Should police also let bank robbers and murderers go in case they come to harm? What if the women, who was clearly willing to drive dangerously, hit a pedestrian around the corner? I think the consequences of driving at an armed cop are pretty obvious and unambiguous.

LovelyDaaling · 02/09/2023 09:36

Much of the US police training focuses on using different methods of force to control situations and less time learning to de-escalate.

Did you watch the video?

DojaPhat · 02/09/2023 10:08

As soon as I heard this I just knew the woman in question would be Black. If she was white she'd be at home with her feet up.

You think the appropriate consequence for being a suspected shoplifter and not wishing to be detained by the police for it is to be murdered??

LolaSmiles · 02/09/2023 17:22

What disturbs me is how shooting to kill is such an acceptable behaviour in the US.

They could have responded as any other non-gun waving law enforcement in other civilised/democratic countries and if they had to draw a gun then surely they could have shot the tyres. I'm not an expert but it must be common sense that shooting someone dead isn't the first port of call.

Me too. The last pregnant woman I read about that was shot, was shot in the stomach and she lived but lost the baby and it was in some southern US state that literally arrested her and put her on trial for homicide of her baby because if she hadn’t provoked her attacker by arguing with them in the street, then her baby wouldn’t have died. The white person that shot her pregnant belly…oh innocent of course because she was an angry Black woman.

Some days I just think the world hates us.

HadalyEve · 02/09/2023 17:39

Just making sure posters are aware that Ms Young was suspected of shoplifting from a grocery store. So, even if she were guilty, that would be stealing food…like milk, bread, rice.…still think fatally shooting an unarmed pregnant woman in front of her children was even remotely justifiable?

She was accused (not proven) of shoplifting alcohol. Were the kids with her? None of the news reports i've read seem to say that.

DojaPhat · 02/09/2023 18:34

@HadalyEve I've just looked up the story you mentioned in Southern US, I honestly thought at this point nothing could shock me regarding the violence routinely experienced by Black women but this takes it to a whole different realm. What in the actual!

MillWood85 · 02/09/2023 19:01

She could have just got out of the car when asked to repeatedly. Instead, she was arguing and trying to drive away / injure the officer.

Was she supposed to get away with shoplifting liquor because she was black? or a woman? or pregnant?

I'm guessing you're one of those people who blame Sarah Everhard for stopping when Wayne Couzens confronted her?

No, the police were meant to do their fucking jobs by arresting her.

She could have. Just becuase she didn't doesn't mean she should have been shot.

Northernsouloldies · 02/09/2023 20:02

All the posts saying she should have done this that and the other. How many of us could think rationally whilst being shouted at and having guns pointed at us.

Simplepink · 02/09/2023 07:32

Fuck me! No one’s talking about Wayne Cousins and women not having to trust a male police officer with this one are they!

Maybe because it’s a completely different event?

If you live in a country where the Police have guns, you commit a crime and then drive off/drive at a police officer, it’s a risk you take.

No, it’s not. Police in Northern Ireland are routinely armed, how often do they shoot and kill shoplifters? There are very few police forces around the world which are primarily unarmed, it’s the norm for police to have guns. In comparable countries, it is just not the norm for police to kill as often as they do in the US.

Ok fine, change ‘country’ to ‘America’ then.
It’s not a secret that they shoot first, ask later.

She was a criminal, evading the law and potentially putting others at risk.

I hope the persona you're able to so ardently invoke online helps to make your day to day a little more bearable @RunningFromInsanity, I really do.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 02/09/2023 22:21

@RunningFromInsanity what was she found guilty of?
