This is horrific. 21 year old woman and her baby both dead.

I mean - surely you would take the car license number and let the person drive off - it's hardly a matter for shooting someone dead!

They don't seem to issue any common sense with guns to these absolute idiots.

Body camera footage shows an officer fatally shooting a pregnant Black woman in the parking lot of a grocery store after she refused to exit her car and instead bumped him with her vehicle in Blendon Township, Ohio, U.S. August 24, 2023 in this still...

Ohio police release video of fatal shooting of pregnant Black woman

The family of the 21-year-old woman, Ta'Kiya Young, demanded for the officer who fired the fatal shot to be held accountable.

Just so senseless.

She'd stolen stuff then ran her car into one of the cops. She clearly didn't deserve to die but there's no way they'd let someone just drive off in those circumstances.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 02/09/2023 07:24

There was no need for the officer to draw his weapon. It's murder. Pure and simple.

itsmyp4rty · 02/09/2023 07:25

I thought it sounded horrific - but it sounds like she was driving straight at the cop that fired the gun. It's not clear how much danger he was in but I wouldn't blame him for shooting if she was just going to run him over without a second thought.

MariaVT65 · 02/09/2023 07:29

I’m not 100% clear on what happened, but my impression from the news I read was that she was stopped for shop lifting, not a traffic offence, and then she tried to drive her car into one of the officers, who is the one who shot her. As PP said, i’m not sure how easy it would have been for him to duck out the way. Or i suppose they could have feared she would be a danger to other road users had she carried on like that.

The video is available to watch. He got in front of her car. He got his gun out, he put his hand on the hood of the car. He shot. Plenty of time to get out of the way, or just not be in the way to begin with if he feared for his life so much that he had to shoot.

LoudSnoringDog · 02/09/2023 07:29

Looks like she was using her vehicle as a weapon, which is an incredibly stupid thing to do in America where the chances of being shot by police are ++++++++

Whataretheodds · 02/09/2023 07:30

Exactly. If he really needed to apprehend her he could have shot the tyres.

Just senseless.

Simplepink · 02/09/2023 07:32

Fuck me! No one’s talking about Wayne Cousins and women not having to trust a male police officer with this one are they!

Eh?

Simplepink · 02/09/2023 07:34

Well not everyone and only a few people have responded so far but surely the only reaction to this should be being horrified not trying to mitigate the actions of the police as she was shoplifting/driving towards him.

Simplepink · 02/09/2023 07:37

And yes they could have shot the tyres. Instead she was shot dead in front of her other two children.
her shoplifting is irrelevant

littleblackcat27 · 02/09/2023 07:39

@LoudSnoringDog have you read the article or seen the video???

Video made public on Friday shows an officer standing next to Young's vehicle as he repeatedly orders her to get out. A second officer comes around the front of vehicle and points a gun at the windshield, demanding that she exits.
Young can be seen turning the wheels to the right, away from the officer, before the vehicle begins moving toward him. It pushes him back as he puts his left hand on the hood, with his gun drawn in his right hand

Because it sounds like you think this woman and her baby died because she was 'stupid' - like it's her fault!! Really?

She was driving very slowly, he had plenty of time to get out of the way. Why draw a gun at someone for allegedly shoplifting? They could have shot at the tyres.

Flipflopflopflip · 02/09/2023 07:41

Watch the video, literally no need for a gun to have been fired. Shocking situation.

Exactly

The whole point of living in a so-called civilised society is that you have a legal system. The fact the police pull out a gun to point at an unarmed woman and child/children is just crazy.

Shame on those defending the police here - you need to get a grip

They should get rid of guns

It is in the American Constitution. They are not likely to just get rid of guns, ever.

America is fucked. Completely and utterly fucked.

sorrynotathome · 02/09/2023 07:50

That country is so fucked up. Perhaps the officer thought the woman had a gun - most people have guns there so it may just be a case of shoot or be shot. This will keep happening and we will all be horrified and then just go on with our lives. You couldn't make me live there if you gave me a billion pounds.

I know. But I still think they should get rid of them.

jallopeno · 02/09/2023 07:53

I can't even understand what is going on in the video. They are just yelling at her to get out the car.

Approaching · 02/09/2023 07:58

It’s utterly incomprehensible isn’t it. That “shoot” is a valid option for police in virtually any circumstance. What would British unarmed police have done? Got out of the way of the car, got her out of it or used their own car to block her in, etc. I think the police there have been conditioned to think (with some, but not full, justification) that their lives are in danger at all times and therefore killing is acceptable in any situation which is not 100% under their control.

jallopeno · 02/09/2023 07:59

@Approaching I agree. It's like it seems to always be an option for them. But it shouldn't be.

She was alleged to have stolen stuff (cos, you know, black people in America never get falsely accused of stuff). And if you watch the video she did not run her car into a cop - she was driving slowly, he stood in front (and neither needed to do that nor was it impossible for him to move out of the way). There were many other ways this could have been dealt with even if she were guilty, which nobody here knows. And it was shoplifting not kidnapping.

Apart from anything else, I wonder if you can't see a reason why black people in the USA are reluctant to get out of their cars or engage with police officers? Because, you know, barely any of them get shot dead, do they?

@Approaching I agree. It's like it seems to always be an option for them. But it shouldn't be.

It is an option if they are in fear for their life or to protect others. However, that's just a handy excuse now ,rather than exceptional circumstances.Good cops spend whole careers without never/rarely shooting their guns, much less kill someone.
