He's withdrawn as Artistic Director of the Beijing olympic games in protest at China's collusion with Sudan in the Darfur genocide.

I applaud his decision.

We don't do Valentines but I think I'd like some chocolate diamonds.

Anyway, Spielberg. Quite right to not work with China, disappointing that he got involved in the first place. Also, as Kew said, that he has no track record of action in his home country. I know it's not a legal obligation to lobby if you're famous. But it's wasteful not to.

angelic

When I heard he withdrew, I thought Spielberg must have wanted out for some reason and gave Darfur as an excuse.

Surely he had heard about Darfur before he got involved.

Well that's the Olympics screwed isn't it??

How can they possibly compete in athletics, rowing, field sports and all, without an over all Artistic Director?? And it's not as if anyone else could do the job, is it??

A bit ridiculous taking the moral high ground now. Why did he accept in the first place?

Also (and I'm going to get crucified here), he's been a massive fundraiser for Israel for decades. WTF with this stance on Darfour now when Palestinians are simply being left to die a slow death with so little media coverage?
Of course, each to their own, but then don't patronise.

I'm not going to argue any of what's probably going to follow, just had to get it off my chest.

Actually now I come to think of it, chocolate diamonds are a much better idea than an olympics needing an artistic director.
