He's withdrawn as Artistic Director of the Beijing olympic games in protest at China's collusion with Sudan in the Darfur genocide.

I applaud his decision.

as far as I am concerned anyone who tries to shame China into acknowledging their arms dealing to Khartoum is doing the right thing.

I find it all a bit weird,
Chocloate diamonds and coffee production could be looked at by Speilburg first - home grown problems though that he choices to ignore.

Niether is right but why choice one and ignore the other?

Lulumama · 13/02/2008 18:09

I agree with ivykaty and kerrymum, why not start at home?

donnie · 13/02/2008 18:16

well clearly you are right there kerrymum. I am always on here harping on about America's role in the arming of Israel and their collusion in the destabilising of the Palestinian territories ( or what is left of them)

Spielberg is not a politician though and he IS involved in the Beijing games. At least he was. Good for him IMO.

Agree with Donnie. China isn't just funding the regime in Darfur, it has its fingers in many pies in Africa with attendant human rights issues plus it will become as big a pollutor in Africa as it is at home. Anything that shames China is good imo.

I was confused. He's an American (and has no track record of protesting about America's "ishoos"), he agreed to help a country with terrible human rights record but he's resigned on the basis that China isn't doing enough about a situation that no-one is doing enough about?

Kewcumber · 13/02/2008 20:49

was I the only person to be wondering about ivykates chocolate diamonds? Until I reread and added a comma.

Desiderata · 13/02/2008 20:51

Anyone got a sneaky feeling the Olympics are going to be a disaster?

For what it's worth, I think Spielberg only took the job on so he could resign from it.

Kewcumber · 13/02/2008 20:54

it looks that way doesn;t it - apparently his contract has been unsigned for a year becuase "I thought thismight happen" (I might be paraphrasing there)

Kewcumber · 13/02/2008 20:55

I kind of hope it isn't a disaster as I just bet some poor group of officials will get banished to a labour camp for ten years if it is.

Desiderata · 13/02/2008 20:59

Yes, I know what you mean, Kew.

Callisto · 13/02/2008 21:01

At least if it is a disaster the Chinese can comfort themselves that it won't be as much of a f** up as the London Olympics...

Desiderata · 13/02/2008 21:04

Ah, no Callisto! We always put on a good show. Have no fear on that score.

ivykaty44 · 13/02/2008 21:36

Kewcumber it took me ages today to spell diamonds - let alone start thinking about commers!!

At least it brought a smile though.

I think that Steven has been persuaded by someone else - can't remember who, and they wanted him to pull out so that it gets the publicity, which of course it now has.
