China opening up. Why isn't the UK being more wary?

in China: Countries tighten rules as tourism set to resume www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-64111492

Why haven't we learned? If we'd shut down 10-14 days earlier than March 23rd 2020 this whole thing may not have been as hard for us.

China's neighbours, Italy and most probably the USA are not throwing their doors open to Chinese tourists, yet the UK sits on the 'let's see' fence.....

Ive just watched the news with a sinking stomach. I dont think insisting on a negative test is too much to ask

Fordian · 28/12/2022 21:48

US just announced they're insisting on a negative covid test.

Conservatives and money I presume

Endpress · 28/12/2022 22:15

The pillaging mismanaging bastards want to be “open for business and holly hockey sticks”

dolor · 28/12/2022 22:18

It's quite simple really.

We're fucking stupid.

lunar1 · 28/12/2022 22:18

Because we never fucking learn! There is absolutely no need for us to get caught up in China's wave, but asking for negative tests is beyond our government.

This ….

Everything this government does is like when all the shit contestants on the apprentice used to fuck up really easy tasks. Just a bunch of thick posh people with no grasp on reality or living in the real world in charge of things, making mistakes because it won’t affect them

Endpress · 28/12/2022 22:21

And they’re probably in Barbados or “hosting family in Norfolk”

Yep that’s the crux of it.

londonmomforlove · 28/12/2022 22:31

I think we should insist on at least a negative test result upon arrival, provided that the Chinese government has a track record of not telling the truth.

I'm worried that they might bring stronger variants that we can't come with.

stormywaves · 28/12/2022 22:33

Because our government don't have the balls to do it in case it offends someone.

Until China provide some sort of explanation of how Covid came to be to start with, how can we trust what they say.

earsup · 28/12/2022 22:36

Probably already landed here with a new strain....

NestingSparrow · 28/12/2022 22:37

Why? We are way ahead of China -we are at the living with COVID stage now. Most people have immunity, we have effective treatments. There is lots of COVID circulating already.
I wish China would admit they started COVID and also how many cases and deaths they actually have.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 28/12/2022 22:38

It’s Christmas. Anyone with any influence in government is off somewhere on their jollies.

I predict restrictions for Chinese travellers will start in about 3 weeks

Grumpybutfunny · 28/12/2022 22:40

Because the sequencing shows it's the same strain and we simply don't care about case numbers now people are vaccinated

And for those who don't have immunity? Do they not matter? As long as everyone else is okay, right?

AreOttersJustWetCats · 28/12/2022 22:44

Covid is rife in the UK with or without Chinese people arriving here. What difference will it make if it's the same strain and not a worse one?

AreOttersJustWetCats · 28/12/2022 22:46

dolor · 28/12/2022 22:41

What's your solution then? Someone without immunity is as likely (probably more likely due to the numbers involved) to contract it from a UK person than a Chinese visitor.

fswaps · 28/12/2022 22:46

Dear god - let us not repeat the mistakes of 2020!

Brendabigbaps · 28/12/2022 22:49

China is where we were 2 years ago as they shut everything down and only opened up again a few weeks ago!
we’re living with it, China spent over 2 years trying to avoid it, they just delayed the inevitable

SkylightSkylight · 28/12/2022 22:50

Why do they not ever learn when they say 'lessons will be learned/learnt!

🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

LookingForTipsNotPuns · 28/12/2022 22:54

We have better vaccines than them. Everyone needs to calm down and I say that as someone who has recently had covid.

Oher · 28/12/2022 22:55

Cos our Government is shit at standing up to the Chinese. Absolutely shit at it. Even when it concerns our own borders.

Feels like February 2020 again when I was wondering why we were accepting direct flights from Wuhan.

Slow handclap for Rishi.

If they don’t have immunity after 6 injections and 3 years of exposure to the virus then when will they?

gingercat02 · 28/12/2022 23:00

Cos the Tories give no fucks!
