There was a rottweiller attack on the front page of the Leicetser Mercury on Saturday. It was a family pet who went for a 7 year old child.Luckily an older child managed to fend it off,but was badly bitten in the process. The dog was apparently kept outside in a yard, but had somehow been let into the kitchen where it went on the attack.

why do people have 'pets' which are kept in there yards? my freind has collies which are kept outside but they are working dogs and not pets. personally i dont see the point of owning a dog if its going to spend all its time outside alone.

I heard a bit of a news item today about a 26 year old being bit by a rottweiller and a 30 year old woman has been charged with allowing the dog to be out of control.

Emprexia · 01/01/2008 14:03

I saw that NAB.

What bothers me, is people dont seem to realise that Rotties are HERDING dogs.. they were bred to be outdoors protecting sheep and cattle.

They don't belong as household pets anymore than a sheepdog does. People know that Border Collies are likely to be bitey/snappy/destructive if left chained up/ignored.

If you're going to have a dog like this they need to be trained and regularly exercised, and be in a house with plenty of gardens for them to live in.. not a poky house with a tiny yard.

there is video footage of him here

feel sorry for the kid but don't blame the dog at all. the mother was 18 apparently, the aunt who was in charge of babysitting was 16 who left the 7 yr old in charge of a 1yr old! when the 7yr old wandered out into the back garden, the dog may have been used to snatching toys from it's hands, and how is the dog supposed to tell the difference between a baby and a toy if it hasn't seen it before? it doesn't look like the humans it's used to.

Rottweilers have the potential to be GREAT family pets when, like any other dog, they are socialised correctly, supervised and trained properly. Most dog's were bred for a purpose, very few dogs were bred to be pets except for the Toy breeds. Setters and spaniels, weimaraners, vizslas etc were all bred to be gun dogs, collies, GSDs etc were bred for Herding, terriers were bred for hunting, but we still keep all these dog's as pets.

Any dog that is left alone in a yard all the time with no exercise of socialising has the potential to turn nasty. It's the same as a human being left in solitary confinement really!

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 01/01/2008 14:31

they did keep the children away from the dog though - that's presumably why it was outside? however it's a shame that no one bothered to check the door to outside was locked. if it had poor little archie may still be alive.

i am more than happy to leave my 1 year old with a 16 year old neighbour. she is more than responsible enough. i don't expect her to be in the same room as him all the time if she needs to pop upstairs or in another room to do something and i think the people who are blaming this terrible tragedy are barking up the wrong tree (not the best word to use in this situation, sorry)

CountryGirl2007 · 01/01/2008 15:16

So if the dog was kept away from the children obviously it wasn't socialised with them.

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 01/01/2008 15:35

not necessarily. the dog may have been allowed to socialise with the children when adults were around who knew how to handle him. we don't know the ins and outs so it isn't really for us to speculate.

hercules1 · 01/01/2008 17:16

I do think it's pretty straightforward. Several young children were left alone and the kids obviously in charge weren't capable of coping responsibly hence what happened. Not the fault of the kids but the adults who left them all knowing there dogs there with the potential to kill.
