The New Year Bolleaux List

Why?
Why so many 'celebrities' and sportsmen 'honoured' in this way?

They're doing a job most would give their eye teeth to do, they're getting rewarded handsomely, they get pampered and feted at every turn and now this?

Honours for being famous

Imvho honours should go only to the unknown thousands of people who work tirelessly and with little reward (in monetary terms) to help and assist others.

So there.
Bah humbug!

You are not wrong.

Every time I hear of this list, I just thing, June Sarpong? June Sarpong?!!!! June Sarpong??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hunkermunker · 29/12/2007 10:01

I just think!

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 29/12/2007 10:03

oh completely agree as you say they get paid way over the odds for it and then get 'honoured'

WanderingHolly · 29/12/2007 10:03

I think they have to hand out a few to undeserving meeja ponces slebs in order to drum up enough interest in the war heroes and charity workers.

Bit sad that.

TheIceQueen · 29/12/2007 10:11

I can't understand why people like Bruce Forsyth who has been involved in showbiz for 60 odd years still hasn't got his knighthood, while people that are hardly out of nappies are getting them

Blandmum · 29/12/2007 10:12

Sometimes people are offered them, and refuse. Alan Bennet is one. Not sure that Brucie would be the type to refuse tho!

TheIceQueen · 29/12/2007 10:13

no he'd accept and do a little dance on the way to collect it

JulesJules · 29/12/2007 10:13

Completely agree. They already get massive amounts of money, recognition, all those prizes and awards they give themselves, free stuff from designers etc etc. And the shameless lobbying - eg. Tess Daly constantly referring to Sir Brucie. Bruce Forsyth. FFS.

JulesJules · 29/12/2007 10:15

Ooops - several crossed posts re Brucie. He is a TV presenter, why should he get a knighthood? Give it to a nurse.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 29/12/2007 10:16

How on earth did Michael "Professional Yorkshireman" Parkinson receive a Knighthood?. For services to what - chair sitting and brown-nosing fellow slebs?.

CarmenerryChristmas · 29/12/2007 10:18

And what on earth is the 'companion of honour' title that they have dug up for Sir Ian Mckellan?

AttilaTheMeerkat · 29/12/2007 10:22

The Companion of Honour is awarded for a pre-eminent and sustained contribution in the arts, science, medicine, or government.

Tommy · 29/12/2007 10:36

realy can't unbderstand why MP got a Knighthood either and Brendan Foster who founded the Great North Run whiuhc encourages thousand of people to get fit and raise loads of money for charity only gets a CBE or whatever.

MP's prize is surely just for longevity? Or do they give them especially for being a sexist patronising old man?

AttilaTheMeerkat · 29/12/2007 10:51

Think the whole Honours system should be abolished.

FlameNFurter · 29/12/2007 10:58

JUNE SARPONG???

Seriously?

hunkermunker · 29/12/2007 13:44

Michael "Mumbles for a living" Parkinson?!

Twiglett · 29/12/2007 13:58

I think the reason for being awarded an honour should be having a food-stuff named after you

you know

like Dame Nelly Melba

Lord Twiglett

ya know what I mean

brusselbeansprouts · 29/12/2007 18:18

BBC news24 keeps showing the emu attack clip of Parky. His big moment of glory and they are still showing him being beaked by a puppet!!

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 29/12/2007 18:19

I am most annoyed about Jacqueline Wilson getting made a Dame.

lapiNewYear · 29/12/2007 18:22

I know 3 people on the list - none of them meedja - and they definitely deserve it. But sometimes you do think "what!"

MerlinsBeard · 29/12/2007 18:23

where can we see the list?

Is June Sarpong really on it??

Wtf for?? Being thin and annoying and whiny and (imo) a pretty pointless presenter?

Upwind · 30/12/2007 02:16

from the BBC have your say:

"Does anyone know what significant public service has been rendered by Richard SUMMERSGILL Director of Child Benefit and Tax Credit Offices, HM Revenue and Customs? It seems very strange to award him a CBE while there are still several investigations going on to find out how the offices he runs managed to lose 25 million personal records.

JK Jolyon, Sidmouth "

Lots of celebrities seem to have been given awards for being famous, senior public "servants" for doing the jobs they are anyway very well paid to do and a few token awards to ordinary people

FlameNFurter · 31/12/2007 07:50

Why is Jacqueline Wilson being made a Dame a bad thing? My children aren't old enough for her stuff yet so I have no idea what it is like, but I maintain that anyone who lights a fire under kids to read is a good thing.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 31/12/2007 19:22

I just felt as far as I know all she has done is write some books and she has been made a Dame. I think ordinary people should get the awards alone, not the celebrities.

WendyWeber · 31/12/2007 19:28

Who is June Sarpong?
