You may have heard the story of Fran Lyon. If not, then this is a simplified version.

Fran is currently 31 weeks pregnant with her first baby
When Fran was sixteen years old, she was the victim of a serious sexual assault, and as a result, she suffered from mental health issues. She received therapy for two years, one year as an inpatient, and less than one following her discharge. She has not received or needed any mental health therapy since that time, and the psychiatrist that treated her has explicitly stated that she has no concerns whatsoever for Fran's mental health.

Unfortunately, early on in Fran?s pregnancy, there was a difficult situation with her (then) partner, and Fran called the police. Due to the nature of the problem and combined with the fact that Fran was pregnant, the police referred the case to social services. Fran was completely honest and open about her past mental health issues, and clear that she no longer suffered from any such problems. However, a ball had started rolling out of control, and a paediatrician, who has never actually met or spoken to Fran, has inexplicably suggested that she may in due course suffer from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. This has resulted in social services deciding that upon her birth, Fran?s baby daughter, Molly, will be taken away from her.

It is abundantly clear that Fran Lyon will be absolutely no danger to her baby, but we suggest that at the very least, Fran should at be allowed to stay in an assessment unit with her baby, Molly, pending an inevitable decision that she is capable of caring for her daughter independently.

Please take a few minutes to watch this clip of Fran being interviewed on This Morning: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2qHcH_Eaocg

Fran if it all gets too much & you want to get away there are probably dozens of us who would give you shelter......not very constructive or sensible long term we all know but that's the feeling at the moment, if you need a break any of us I'm sure would wilingly give you a bed & a rest

I'm beside myself with rage & frustration that a human being & her child could be treated like this in the 21st century.

Kinder s - I'll join you in treating Beeny to that bottle name your venue!

Beenleigh · 10/11/2007 22:11

Hello! This is fantastic news! I would have done exactly the same, but like others said, would probably have been tempted by even further away!!!
Phew, don't know what to say, except CHEERS!!!
Fran, if you ever, although I sincerely hope you won't, need us again, we're here for you!
Please keep us posted with everything.
Do Hexham have to hand over the case, or do they have an option to keep it? I'm assuming that it will be looked at from scratch by different people??
If you're ever in the smoke, let me know! I'll have a large glass of red, and you can have a .......well, who am I to dictate, hopefully we can both have champagne!!!

Thanks Beeny you're on!

I am not so sure it's fantastic news yet though- lets jsut hope the new SS department are more open to discusion but I'm not celebrating yet.

424 votes though!

edam · 10/11/2007 23:18

agree we should all keep our fingers crossed that the SWs in Fran's new home town have some common sense.

bossybritches · 10/11/2007 23:21

Bedtime bump

426!!

Come on lets get it over 500 tomorrow!

looneytune · 10/11/2007 23:31

Am and about all this, I hadn't heard until now and it's had me in tears - how could they do this!!!

Me and hubby have both signed.

Oh....and I've joined the Facebook group too!

Good luck, I hope something can be done about all this, it's just outrageous!!

tatt · 10/11/2007 23:32

I'm concerned about the post on the other site suggesting Fran is manipulative and that there is much that hasn't been said. I'm aware of how manipulative some people can be and how they can lie to themselves. Social Services are damned if they do or if they don't - I have a lot of sympathy for them.

However I don't believe anyone should be denying a mother the opportunity to breastfeed their child. I'm not convined that there is enough evidence to remove a child from its mother at birth - there should be VERY strong evidence to do that. So another bump for this.....

Beenleigh · 11/11/2007 00:12

I agree bossy and Edam, fingers crossed. I can;t believe that this could happen twice, but in all honestly, a week ago, I wouldn;t have believed it would happen once, so yes, let's hope.

I have just read the article in the Mail(from Sept) and noticed that the paediatrician who wrote the letter about Fran is the same one who gave evidence at the trial of Trupti Patel, saying

the fact that Trupti Patel's daughter Mia was found to have four fractured ribs made it "overwhelmingly likely" that her death was not natural.

bbc

Hmm, good expert opinion there.

I do not know if this has been mentioned before, there have been so many threads on this case.

TheMolesMother · 11/11/2007 09:30

Bump.

bossybritches · 11/11/2007 09:33

No I don't think so kinder but it doesn't hurt to bring them up again as often these links get lost in long threads!

I remember this case because didn't it turn out there was a family history of SID?

here you are

I can see why the SS would be suspicious though so don't blame them for looking closely, but a bit of family research/ history at the begining of this case would have saved so much heartache.

I feel like we're left dangling on a string, waiting for the new lot to have a look. Heaven knows how poor Fran must be feeling!

OP posts:
bossybritches · 11/11/2007 12:21

Exactly Beeny, I have a nasty feeling they'll string her along till the birth & then say "oh you're ok see you" & she will have been through all this torture....

But at least it would be a positive outcome.

Heading for the big 500!!

Let's do it by bedtime !

FranLyon · 11/11/2007 13:35

Hello,

Yes - it is the same paediatrician, also for Angela Cannings.

I'm getting by at the minute. I guess it's all a waiting game now. I'm a bit low today, but I guess that is to be expected every now and then at the minute. It will, as all things do, pass.

Fran

ruty · 11/11/2007 13:41

Fran, what is the next step? Do Northlumberland pass the case onto the Midland SS? do you have a meeting set up? Just wondering how it works.

FranLyon · 11/11/2007 13:58

Yeah, there will be a "transfer conference" arranged (not sure when - soon I would guess). Northumberland, the new local authority, me, and new medical team (GP, midwife, child protection nurse etc.) and legal will be at the conference. Having never been to one before I don't know how it will work. I would guess that Northumberland will lay out their concerns, my solicitor will lay out our points, I'll express my willingness to co-operate and the new local authority will decide how they want to take it forward.

I may well be entirely wrong about all that though - it's just my best guess! Someone else on here may have a better idea!

I'm going to contact the new SS tomorrow morning and let them know I'm "here" so to speak. I might have a bit of a better idea then of what will happen next.

Thanks,

Fran

ruty · 11/11/2007 14:02

Thanks Fran. Best of luck with it. Here's hoping for more common sense and compassion in the new lot.
