You may have heard the story of Fran Lyon. If not, then this is a simplified version.

Fran is currently 31 weeks pregnant with her first baby
When Fran was sixteen years old, she was the victim of a serious sexual assault, and as a result, she suffered from mental health issues. She received therapy for two years, one year as an inpatient, and less than one following her discharge. She has not received or needed any mental health therapy since that time, and the psychiatrist that treated her has explicitly stated that she has no concerns whatsoever for Fran's mental health.

Unfortunately, early on in Fran?s pregnancy, there was a difficult situation with her (then) partner, and Fran called the police. Due to the nature of the problem and combined with the fact that Fran was pregnant, the police referred the case to social services. Fran was completely honest and open about her past mental health issues, and clear that she no longer suffered from any such problems. However, a ball had started rolling out of control, and a paediatrician, who has never actually met or spoken to Fran, has inexplicably suggested that she may in due course suffer from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. This has resulted in social services deciding that upon her birth, Fran?s baby daughter, Molly, will be taken away from her.

It is abundantly clear that Fran Lyon will be absolutely no danger to her baby, but we suggest that at the very least, Fran should at be allowed to stay in an assessment unit with her baby, Molly, pending an inevitable decision that she is capable of caring for her daughter independently.

Please take a few minutes to watch this clip of Fran being interviewed on This Morning: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2qHcH_Eaocg

A different view

here

Elizabetth · 26/11/2007 00:56

That's just more abuse and slander OST.

Calling a woman who is being threatened with having her baby taken from her a drama queen is just the lowest of the low.

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 09:53

What a totally nasty & badly researched article -thank you OST for sharing that with us as it just shows the nastiness that can be stirred up when a mother fights for the right to keep her unborn child

(dramatic? Yes. Forced to be so IMO)

There are several points that are factually incorrect about that article if anyone would care to read back over this & other threads MN-ers have started on here & on which Fran herself has willingly answered many direct questions.

The biggest one is she DID say she was willing to forgo her confidentiality with regards to the SS & her mental health history, & freely discussed it.

The poor woman has been hounded out of the country-leave her in peace to enjoy the last few weeks of her pregnancy.

fryalot · 26/11/2007 09:57

well said BB

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 10:10

Thanks Squonk - I then went to the other thread where you'd said much the same!

Sorry!

edam · 26/11/2007 10:16

I'm trying to post a comment on NHS Exposed but have to sign up for a Google account and the email hasn't come through yet. Nasty piece of shit-stirring. If they had a decent argument they wouldn't need to resort to insulting anyone who disagrees with them.

I thought NHS Exposed was there to defend the little guy against the power of the authorities. Clearly not.

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 10:20

Good luck edam I might join you this has made me so

Upwind · 26/11/2007 10:24

Edam,

I wouldn't bother, your comments are unlikely to appear. Dr Rita Pal is an impassioned supporter of David Southall and her ramblings are neither rational nor reasonable.

edam · 26/11/2007 10:29

Read the link to Rita Pal's comments. Good grief. I bloody hope she doesn't have any input into child protection. Hardly a balanced individual capable of making rational, dispassionate assessments.

Ozymandius · 26/11/2007 10:38

Hmm, is 'drama queen' her clinical diagnosis as a doctor? Has she ever met Fran Lyon? Of course not. How unprofessional she sounds - and that's being polite. Thoroughly unethical in every possible way.

fryalot · 26/11/2007 10:39

If someone who has never met her can decide arbitrarily to have her baby removed at birth, then presumably, she is fair game for any other random judgement by others who have also never met her.

edam · 26/11/2007 10:42

I think the person who never met her was a doctor who said 'if' SS's allegations were correct the baby should be removed. That clearly doesn't mean he was telling SS to remove the baby or indeed bolstering their case in any way. Sadly SS seem incapable of understanding basic logic. Or indeed basic English.

fryalot · 26/11/2007 10:45

fair point.

But he's still not going on my christmas card list
