Supposedly the overall IQ difference is around 7 points higher for breastfed babies.

And 90% of the population have the gene that would enable them to benefit this way from breastfeeding...

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/11/2007 08:46

Haven't read link yet. Does it matter how long they are bf for?

[clearly raising genius child]

hunkermunker · 06/11/2007 08:48

Really interesting, I think. There's a lot more to bf that nobody knows yet, I think.

hunkermunker · 06/11/2007 08:48

I just think that though, obv [gah]

I think.

Callisto · 06/11/2007 08:51

I think that too Hunker

I heard that it is an increase of at least 7 IQ points.

SpacePuppy · 06/11/2007 09:12

SO:
DH was breastfed and has high blood cholesterol and had a heart attack age 43 and IQ of 144

ME: Bottle fed, Cholesterol level of 3.8 and IQ 126 no heart disease in sight.

?! Anyway its breast-milk that is the key not the action of breastfeeding.

TheDullWitch · 06/11/2007 09:21

It is bollocks. Middle class mothers are more likely to breast feed. Middle class mothers are more likely to have higher IQs. IQ is, to a greater degree, inherited. Therefore all the survey is showing is that middle class mothers pass on their IQ to their children.

TheDullWitch · 06/11/2007 09:23

If they took loads of low IQ mothers with twins, let them bf one but not the other, and studied their relative IQs, maybe it would have credibility.

nangnangnang · 06/11/2007 09:33

Have you read it?

hunkermunker · 06/11/2007 09:42

TDW, massive ethical problems with your way of conducting a study!

Why is it "bollocks"?

SweetFA · 06/11/2007 09:45

I was bottle fed and my IQ is about 135.

Hey maybe I would have been a genius, oi MUM what were you thinking of!!!!!!!!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 06/11/2007 09:47

I remember reading stuff about BF babies having a higher IQ years ago............so why is it suddenly news now?? Or is a "new" study (showing the same things we already knew )

dullwitch, did you actually read the article?

"It was already accepted that breastfeeding increases a child?s IQ significantly, but some critics of earlier research pointed out that in the West this may be because higher social classes tend both to breastfeed their children and spend more money on their education than lower social classes. The latest study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, claims to have eliminated these |potentially confounding |social factors."

well, the study must be wrong then
qucik, ring king's college and let them know [rolls eyes]

TheQueenOfQuotes · 06/11/2007 09:50

and really how many people (unless they really are a genius) do well in life purely because of their IQ???

Can't have the gene then, unless Sn conditions render it neutral- or maybe DS3 and DS1 would have been worse off if they ahd been FF from thse start? who knows!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 06/11/2007 09:51

btw I'm disputing the evidence - like I said it's been known for years that bf babies were smarter.

however could you imagine if we all HAD to put our IQ's on our job applications....and they selected you based on your IQ

TheQueenOfQuotes · 06/11/2007 09:52

sorry that should be NOT disputing the evidence LOL.

PeachyCosmicExplosion · 06/11/2007 09:54

QofQ the real gist of this study was the genetic link- rather than the IQ part, that was already established. And the report i read said that it was controlled to remove the middle class mum - middle class IQ link, was it not then? (althoughthe idea of a study allowing Mum to bf one twin and not another would never get ethics approval surely?)
