Texas is really, really bloody scary right now

People were struggling with poverty even when things were going well. They've been hard hit by COVID, and now this.

Link here www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/feb/18/texas-food-banks-crisis-storm-freezing-supplies

Terrifying.

No one in Texas really likes Ted Cruz that much, they just tolerated him a bit more than Beto (who really is insufferable). He’ll never be primaried though and four years is a long time.

But he’ll never be president, so at least there’s that.

hannayeah · 19/02/2021 20:57

Four days ago the news reported Biden hanging out at Camp David playing video games with his grand daughter as if it was a wonderful thing.

Four days ago my family in Texas was without electricity, under a boil water advisory, and the roads were very dangerous. It was terrifying. They went almost 4 days without any electricity, little food and no safe water.

Why judge Cruz and Biden get different measures?

hannayeah · 19/02/2021 20:57

*using not get

So Biden using the existing facilities in the Presidential property is not a happy story

and it was BEFORE the storm hit
the state whose Senators voted to withhold FEMA funds from New York and California

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/02/2021 20:59

The carbon monoxide poisoning is so sad. Trying desperately to keep warm. Those poor people.

NoCherryNoDeal · 19/02/2021 21:02

Anyone else tickled that Beto came second? Just me.

countingthestarswithmini · 19/02/2021 21:03

To be fair other states and countries cope really well with -18c temp.

hannayeah · 19/02/2021 21:03

@ListeningQuietly

Fluffy pieces about any elected leader on a vacation playing with his family while there’s a major humanitarian crisis impacting his constituents are not happy, no.

hannayeah · 19/02/2021 21:05

No, not before the storm hit either.

It started a week ago yesterday. I know because I had a ticket to fly there and had to cancel my trip.

So the president of the USA needs to wear a hair shirt the whole time

but Ted Cruz is fine to hit the beaches of Cancun
leaving his dog to freeze

Biden has said that he'll visit Texas when he is not a distraction
but in the mean time he's sorted FEMA funds
while playing mario
cos he knows how to use the team

Lweji · 19/02/2021 21:12

My nephew is in Arkansas and doing well.
There's a huge difference at state lines.
Did you see the road photos?

iklboo · 19/02/2021 21:14

Yeah, cos Trump would have been right down there first thing offering to put constituents up in his horrid free of charge, handing out blankets, working in a soup kitchen etc would he? Like fuck he would.

iklboo · 19/02/2021 21:15

Hotels, not horrid (Freudian slip)

Kendodd · 19/02/2021 21:34

But it's still third. Could have been first, but it's third. Same as Europe being at the top of the map, and inflated in size. Could have been at the bottom, there's no up in space, but it's not. Could have used a different projection so it wasn't giant, but didn't. These things aren't accidents, they are ingrained prejudice

I prefer 'majority world'. I'm hoping it catches on.
I agree with the top, bottom and 1, 2, 3 thing but in fairness there's no way to fairly and accurately represent a global world on a flat map.
I've never heard 'majority world' used, 'the South' or 'Global South' is often used.

frumpety · 19/02/2021 21:34

They are suffering as a result of the values they uphold. I am really struggling to feel sympathy for them

They are suffering because it got really cold somewhere it normally doesn't, non of their infrastructure is designed for that level of cold because it rarely happens. This isn't about values its about weather. The weather doesn't check who voted for who before it happens.

pallisers · 19/02/2021 21:38

Why judge Cruz and Biden get different measures?

Because Biden did exactly what he was supposed to do - issued a federak emergency declaration so funds resources and help could be triggered from the federal government. He has also indicated that he will authorise broader emergency relief for Texas. This despite the both texas senators stating falsely that Joe Biden stole the election and voting against the electoral college results in a breathtaking assault on democracy. Oh and Cruz voted against relief for NY/NJ after Hurricane Sandy.

Even gov Abbott (a fucker) acknowledged this

“I thank President Biden for quickly issuing a Federal Emergency Declaration…This disaster declaration provides Texas with additional resources and assistance that help our communities respond to this winter weather.”

Biden travelling to Texas would be stupid and unnecessary right now- much like Cruz's skipping along to his holliers requiring police help to and from the airport was stupid and unneccesary.

Lindsay Graham (another fucker) said of Cruz something like- if a senator killed him on the senate floor and the senate was the jury that senator would be acquited. He is odious.

Texas kept off the national grid to avoid federal regulation of its energy supply and to experiment with some weird voodoo market force arguments that republicans now seem to think replace actual governance. The city of El Paso - also in Texas - opted into the national grid and has had no blackouts.

Must say the memes are funny though and there some enterprising soul has created a twitter account for that poor snowflake.

Oh but there is!!!

Need alert! OK so it's not perfect but the AuthaGraph projection is pretty good. Fidelity of size but long/lat is off. Pretty cool.

Kendodd · 19/02/2021 21:44

Thing is, it's not just about an unprecedented weather event, or if it had happened to be an earthquake or something similar. It's about the levels of poverty, state support and infrastructure. I don't know enough about the USA to comment, but I do know about the UK. We are a democracy (imperfect but still) we get the society we build. If we cared enough about child poverty (for example) in the UK, we'd do something about it. People suffering in poverty in the UK, or certain communities seeing a reduction in life expectancy, is a result of the values we hold. We are all responsible.

Roussette · 19/02/2021 21:45

Why judge Cruz and Biden get different measures?

And your comments on AOC who has raised $2M, a Democrat NY Senator who is on her way down to Texas to help?

noodlezoodle · 19/02/2021 21:45

Well that’s down to Biden to get FEMA involved.

@BritWifeinUSA do you mean like he did 5 days ago?

Lweji · 19/02/2021 21:46

Biden didn't exactly escape to the sun. Like California or Florida. The weather at Camp David was also bleak and cold.
And it's still very much a work location with limited amenities.
Not a proper holiday spot.

doublehalo · 19/02/2021 21:48

@Porcupineintherough

They are suffering as a result of the values they uphold. I am really struggling to feel sympathy for them - which probably makes me a terrible human being but there it is.
This is a vile comment.

Do you not understand how democracy works?

Shame on you.

Kendodd · 19/02/2021 21:50

Is that this one? Lots of different maps came up when I googled.

Kendodd · 19/02/2021 21:55

If that is the AuthaGraph is more accurate, India looks quite small?I imagine India much bigger (quite possibly wrongly). I agree, very cool map though.
