Texas is really, really bloody scary right now

People were struggling with poverty even when things were going well. They've been hard hit by COVID, and now this.

Terrifying.

@oil0W0lio

It's shocking to see third world conditions in a first world country, but a wealthy country with high levels of inequality is not a 'rich' country it is a cruel and morally bankrupt country
It might be more correct to say that a cruel and morally bankrupt political Party has held sway for far, far too long. Even under Obama, the Republicans held the Senate, so NO laws could be passed that they did not approve. To my knowledge, there are over 400, passed by a Democratic House, that are just...sitting there. Laws addressing voter suppression, laws addressing gun violence, laws addressing fair taxing of the very wealthy (who are the most likely to pay NO taxes). Perhaps we can begin to change that.

As for Texas, our new President has been in contact with their Governor and offered aid. I do not know if it has been accepted. Beto O'Rourk, a former Democratic Presidential hopeful, has been manning phone lines, working to get seniors to "warming centers." A New York (Democratic) Senator has raised over 2 MILLION dollars in a bit over two days, and is currently in Texas helping to distribute aid. All the while, Ted Cruz makes excuses for why he was in Cancun, and the other Republicans all nod and say "Yes" and "amen!"

There are a good many Democrats in Texas, however, the state, as with most Southern states, is heavily Gerrymandered. This means that voting districts are drawn up to heavily favor Republicans. It should be outlawed, but would have to be done state-by-state, given our form of government, where States' Rights are so highly prioritized.

And we MUST address income inequality. 1% of our population holds JUST under 99% of the wealth, and the very wealthiest here often pay almost nothing, or nothing at all in taxes. It is iniquitous.

Back to Texas. Make no mistake. This is part of our Climate Crisis. It IS the very definition of Global Warming, which first disrupts global weather patterns. Global Warming in the past has triggered mini ice ages.

@SugarfreeBlitz

I saw they didn't have any water and I wondered why they didn't just boil snow. There was enough of it, but it seemed rude to suggest it.

Terrible times, poor people in Texas. Hope it's getting easier there now.

In my part of Houston, we got 1/2" of snow.
It wasn't snow but very cold temperatures.
Earlier in the thread, I mentioned that it was 72F/22C last Thursday. It was 16F/-8C with "feels like" temperatures at 0F/-17C.

Our houses are not heavily insulated because we are used to very high temperatures from May-November. In fact, we were lamenting having an extremely mild winter LAST WEEK!

Many houses have electric ranges, we don't all have fireplaces either to boil snow.

Today, the high was 60F/15C...

No one in Texas really likes Ted Cruz that much, they just tolerated him a bit more than Beto (who really is insufferable). He’ll never be primaried though and four years is a long time.

But he’ll never be president, so at least there’s that.

I laughed out loud when I read your comment.

Imagine being at the ballot box (like I was) and having to decide between a dickhead (Cruz) and Beto (tool). Texans were going to lose, no matter what.

Beto and I share a hometown and the guy claims to be so proud of being from there but he didn't do right for our city. He then decided to run for senate and had all these celebrities in Hollywood raising money and his profile and he still lost against Cruz. Cruz?! Then the guy runs for president? And now he's trying to be visible because he's looking to run for governor 🤦🏻‍♀️ Go home, fool!

As for our senator...2022 is coming soon for you!

@Scaramozzo
What a spiteful nasty post.

Lweji · 21/02/2021 09:15

Although, for the record, O'Rourke at least wouldn't have disputed the Presidential election results and wouldn't have been complicit with the Capitol invasion. And he didn't escape to Mexico, despite being in favour of strict border control. Oh well.

I do wonder if there are many Texans who traditionally vote GOP who are rethinking how they vote. Governor elections are due in 2022, IIRC. Or 2024? Is that enough time to forget how Texans were screwed up by their GOP leadership?
@SugarfreeBlitz

If you've done winter camping, boiling snow for water is almost 5 to 1 ratio. 5 litres of snow for one litre of water. Time consuming and expensive.
Wow, ok. No I haven't done winter camping, but thanks!

Do you remember last year there was a run on people selling "evacuation packs" and survival kits? There was a feeling that things could get bad then. I have a gas camping cooker and camping lights close to hand and also if no drinking water we live near a river and I'd boil water from it. I am going to stock up on other survival bits in case we get power outages here.

I bet they won't.

Yup, weather is weird. A week ago it was -7, today was 12. No storm in between, thankfully.
