Should pregnant women be banned from smoking in light of new research?

hunkermunker · 14/10/2007 11:51

See here

"Nine out of 10 mothers whose babies suffered cot death smoked during pregnancy, according to a scientific study to be published this week. The study, thought to be one of the most authoritative to date on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), says women who smoke during pregnancy are four times more likely than non-smokers to see their child fall victim to cot death."

Personally, I find it very, very hard to understand why anybody smokes while knowingly pregnant. And yes, I know it's addictive. I speak as an ex-smoker, not somebody who has no idea what it's like to have a love affair with the evil weed.

LOL Milliways.
I can't believe it's still going on.

Is it potentially really bad for your children if you smoke whilst pregnant??
erm.............YES

So???

Don't do it.

Simple.

LoRayningNewtsAndFrogs · 15/10/2007 16:27

Oops.

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 15/10/2007 16:28

Post of the week, hunker

But I think your dreams are too small

hunkermunker · 15/10/2007 16:28

Ahem.

Clearly Mental.

Custardo, can I leave a space where you imagine what my response is to your posts to Aitch, please? I can't actually write it or you'll call me arsey (and worse) - although I'm wondering if I'll post this unscathed, tbh.

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 15/10/2007 16:29

Can't sit in a Daily Mail boat, Lapin, my urge to defecate would overwhelm me.

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 15/10/2007 16:30

Can I just add that my "clearly mental" post was a correction of my typo and NOT a reference to Custardo.

I'm going to DIE for not making that clearer though, I'm sure...

It's a little like leading a horse to water but not being able to make it drink analogy.

The horse has to believe it's truly thirsty, and the mum has to believe her baby will be harmed by smoking, not 'maybe', but will be, and unfortunately the surveys, researches and ultimate statistics are still too vague because research suggests, but doesn't confirm..

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 15/10/2007 16:32

But what a typo, hunker

hunkermunker · 15/10/2007 16:33

You can take the bf campaigning out of the girl, but you can't take the...nah, it doesn't work, really, does it, LL?!

ROFL!

'Maybe' there will be a problem seems to be enoguh to stop people eating liver pate thoguh doesn't it.

Suppose it's all down to just how selfish you are and how much guidance you are happy to ignore.

SaintJude · 15/10/2007 16:47

NNT, I am struggling to see what your point is. I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Retrospective studies have shown that 9 out of 10 mothers whose babies who died of SIDS smoked during pg.

THe same way that retrospective studies showed that putting a baby to sleep on their back were less likely to die of SIDS.

Ditto with studies that showed babies who sleep in the same room as the parent/s are less likely to die of SIDS.

We all know that there are no benefits to smoking, and in fact ALL research points towards smoking being detrimental for the health of not only the smoker, but those who live/work around a smoker.

Now, inspectors running around checking that all babies are
a) put to sleep on their backs
b) sleeping in the same room as their parent/s

are Just Not Practical. The fact remains that the advice on prevention of SIDS should continue to be hammered home.

It might piss off people who smoke, but, it's not so much of a hardship, when you look at what this advice is worth - is it? I'd rather piss off the smokers whilst hammering home advice that can realistically save babies lives, personally. Particularly when there are NO benefits to smoking.

What's to argue?

"Custardo, can I leave a space where you imagine what my response is to your posts to Aitch, please? I can't actually write it or you'll call me arsey (and worse) - although I'm wondering if I'll post this unscathed, tbh."

first post i came across when clickng on this thread.

did no- one read it?

who called who arsey>?

who called who anthing?

any name calling here?

yes aitch

not me

why the fuck is a reference being directed at me - that i would call anyone anything?

i didn't do last night. at all,

Judy1234 · 15/10/2007 16:52

We don't know about the cause of the death. It could be mothers who smoke don't care about their children so much, tend to be from lower classes and have less money I would think and any one of those other factors could be responsible or the smoking might calm them down so they don't rush upstairs all the time to check on babies or something.

SaintJude · 15/10/2007 16:54

Hunker at your typo......

SaintJude · 15/10/2007 16:57
Tortington · 15/10/2007 16:58

the whole point being that aitch was being a complete bitch backed up by st jude ( whoever YOU are.

She ASKS me to tell her where

SHE asks me to show her who noticed her attitude

I DO JUST that

and then her minions ( with monkeys) come along and take the piss.

the piss at the post SHE asked me to do.

what a bunch of horrible people you are.

Tortington · 15/10/2007 16:59

she was being mean.

not for the first time either - specifically to me rather than any other poster - and this is not the first thread either

BUT DONT ASK ME TO FUCKNG WELL GO OFF AND PROVE IT

BECUASE IF I DO YOU WILL THEN MAKE CSI REFERENCES in twattish manner

Tortington · 15/10/2007 17:04

irony of ironies Aitch was actually intelligetn enought ounderstand the civil liberties point that i was making - (without having to say anything )- becuase well most intelligent people actually got it - still she called it arsey

whilst starry is still scratching head...with "ummmm i don't geddit" noises

Tortington · 15/10/2007 17:06

my apologies to blazingsadles who it seems was refering to "some people...flying monkeys" was actually calling AItch a witch? for what reason i don't know as she was clearly siding with Aitch until that point

LoRayningNewtsAndFrogs · 15/10/2007 17:08

The thing about these statistics is that they dont say an awful lot
how many parents that stopped smoking during pregnancy and started again after birth babies that died??
How many of the parents that smoked, continued to smoke and then co-slept?
How many of these aprents that smoked also drank?
Or took drugs?
and so on and so on.

There are TONS of pieces of information missing here, but surely if it helps more parents stop smoking then it doesnt really matter??

Don't think it can really be banned though, thats just silly.

SaintJude · 15/10/2007 17:09

And now you are calling myself and others names?

But we are being horrible to you?

I am simply pointing out, time and time again after you post attacking aitch, that this alleged sleight that aitch has made against you is (IMO) imagined. I have done it in a polite, and restrained manner. Simply because I think it is daft to argue over nothing - there really is nothing for you to get upset with Aitch about.

Now you are suggesting that this is being carried over from other threads?????

I put it to you that it is you that is carrying an "issue" over from other threads, which is why you feel like you are being got at, when you really arent.

To suggest that others who agree with myself (and aitch) are "horrible" "minions with monkeys" is, simply bizarre.

I'm sorry that you are feeling got at. I really do think you need to take a step back and look at this again though.

2shoescreepingthroughblood · 15/10/2007 17:15

i think you should all have a fag and calm down

hunkermunker · 15/10/2007 17:16

You posted a long list of other things that aren't recommended in pregnancy and said women should be jailed for them.

Then said pg women should be jailed for eating sushi.

No discussion of why, it wasn't a civil liberties point at the time, just a fairly arsey (yes, arsey) post.

And Aitch posts again to ask what you meant and you call her vitriolic and mean.

So I posted as I did because I realise this is a parp topic for you (I remember I've had heated debates about smoking in the past with you) and my response that I wanted you to imagine was:

Why on earth are you accusing Aitch of being vitriolic and mean, Custardo, when it was you posting using bold and CAPITALS about JAILING women for eating sushi in an arsey fashion?!

OP posts:
SaintJude · 15/10/2007 17:19

2shoes...I may have to squeeze your smoking fingers just a little tooooo tightly for that comment

SaintJude · 15/10/2007 17:21

CAn I be pedantic, and just say that it is not that they "arent recommended" as much as it is recommended that you avoid them......

thanks....
