here
I'm actually really upset by this. "I can't breathe"
Clearly I wasn't there and I don't know what happened but his crime was forgery.

I saw this headline yesterday too, and also felt really upset by it.

I read on BBC news this morning that four police officers have now been terminated for this. Let’s hope the main perpetrator is charged with murder/manslaughter.

StealthPolarBear · 27/05/2020 08:08

Yes. This isn't getting the coverage it deserves (for obvious reasons) but hopefully those responsible will be locked up for a long time

I unintentionally watched the whole video when searching his name. It is truly awful. The EMTs, when they finally arrived, didn't even attempt CPR. What was really telling is all the bystanders trying to help but terrified they themselves would be shot (one had already been maced for trying to step in). All I can say is thank God for camera phones and social media. It's the only way it's (slowly) coming to the attention of the public.

AlinaSquareQueen · 27/05/2020 08:53

Agree with all you say. Added to that, I strongly believe that this type of police brutality would not have been inflicted on a white person.

belfasteast · 27/05/2020 08:56

Utterly sickening to the core.

Gncq · 27/05/2020 08:58

The police force in America seem to recruit blokes who just want to abuse and murder black Americans. It seems to be part of the job profile.

StealthPolarBear · 27/05/2020 17:43

Agree - do we ever read reports like this where the victim is white? Are they not newsworthy?
Repeating that while this guy resisted arrest his original crime was forgery.

I don’t agree that all police officers in America will show this level of brutality, there must be some good or at least average ones, surely!

This story though is disgusting, regardless of the crime, no one deserves this. I really hope the perpetrators are treated like criminals and not cops because that at best was manslaughter.

Serin · 28/05/2020 08:31

It was truly horrifying.
I dont for agree that all American police officers are the same though.
My cousin is a senior police officer in California, his wife is black and his 3 DC are mixed heritage.
I feel for him when these atrocities keep occuring, on the one hand, as a white officer he is being blamed, on the other he is bloody angry and worried for his family.

StealthPolarBear · 28/05/2020 11:27

Completely agree sorry. I think there is institutional racism but that isn't the same as saying all officers (or most) are racist.

The video is shocking and tragic.

Given that George was on tbe ground and handcuffed there was no reason to kneel on him. And what kind of practice is that anyway - having the life literally squeezed out of you?

This is murder. That cop would have known when George stopped talking and moving something was wrong.

If he behaved like this with a camera on him, Imagine what he could do without one.

He will be murdered if he goes to prison and that would be fair enough.

FredaFrogspawn · 29/05/2020 06:53

That would never have happened to the gun-toting white MAGA protesters earlier in the month.

lastburritos · 29/05/2020 21:05

I watched the video and it was so upsetting. The way he just goes silent and still. Just awful.

Omgnamechange · 30/05/2020 06:06

It’s awful what happened and the response for appropriate action against the killer to slow. Also surprised at the level of threads and comments about this case on Mumsnet. Very sad this level of common place brutality and murder are still so prevalent.

StealthPolarBear · 30/05/2020 07:10

Glad to see this isn't going away any time soon. I don't think I can watch the video.
Trump called his family "fantastic people"
Hopefully he said more than that

Did you see the CNN reporter got arrested for being black recorded live honestly you couldn't make America up

GenerateUsername · 30/05/2020 07:16

I watched the video without really knowing what it was (can’t remember why), I think I thought I was going to see someone being arrested and that was it. No, I watched someone die by asphyxiation. I still have no words. No wonder there’s rioting. There is a video of a man being murdered in cold blood and nothing much has been done about it.

The officer concerned was been charged with murder and manslaughter yesterday. The authorities say they are still considering whether he should face further charges. The other officers involved have been fired from the police and are still under investigation.

Given the procedural constraints on the police in Minnesota, a murder charge 4 days after the incident is very quick. The DA suggested that they have never charged anyone with murder that quickly before. I don't know if that is correct.

slipperywhensparticus · 30/05/2020 18:41

He was charged with murder 3

WaktiWapnasi · 30/05/2020 18:52

A video from another angle shows two other policemen kneeling on his body and in the initial video you can hear one of them goading him saying "get in the car, come on, get in the car", whilst they are all on him.

This was a sadistic lynching and I really hope all of those men are successfully prosecuted for their part in his murder.

prh47bridge · 30/05/2020 19:32

Third degree murder and second degree manslaughter. Minnesota is one of the few states that has third degree murder - most only have first and second degree.

ky07 · 30/05/2020 21:40

@slipperywhensparticus you couldn't make America up? Like nowhere else is racist as hell??

Gncq · 31/05/2020 09:07

America is somewhat unique in the west with regard to it's racism.

ky07 · 31/05/2020 15:29

@Gncq Do you honestly believe that??

Chiyo666 · 31/05/2020 15:32

Turns out the 20 he tried to use wasn’t even fake. I bet the cashier feels like a pos.
