she always wanted to be called cherie booth, and be taken as an independent woman in her own right. Now it's Cherie Blair: The Autobiography because, presumably as wife of the ex-PM, you make more money with a book title like that. You can't have it both ways.

I don't know anyone who'd want to buy it anyway. Wasn't her last effort a flop? I think she should have taken the hint then!

wheelsonthebus · 20/09/2007 17:20

agreed

Was the last one the Goldfish Bowl? If so it was probably a flop because it wasn't about them, just about lots of earlier PMs' wives - I bet this one will sell better.

(I wouldn't buy it but I'd be interested to read the best bits )

kookaburra · 20/09/2007 17:52

Agreed and as the best bits will be serialised in a newspaper anyway why bother to buy it....!!!!

rookiemum · 20/09/2007 19:35

Totally agree with you wheelsonthebus.

The one and only reason people would be in the slightest bit interested in her is because of who she married.

IMHO she should get on with her highly paid legal career and earn peoples respect by doing that instead of trying to bolster their coffers by churning out some rubbish.

Oh so glad someone started this thread, it has to be said doesn't it.

tassisssss · 20/09/2007 19:39

i'll read it

for some reason she fascinates me

i think it's because of the money chasing. i know life must be a comedown after Downing St, but you don't have to live in a £3 million house in Belgravia and hawk yourself round on the lecture/autobiography circuit to pay for it. There's more to life surely. I thought that was what the Labour Party was all about. The Third Way. And i am not even hugely political.

hmm well in fairness - I am not sure that it is true to say "she always wanted to be called Cherie Booth" - she built her career on her own merits long long long before Tony Blair was a well known or powerful name.
so it wasn't a political statement as such, it was just her name.
I am not sure why she should be criticised for that. would you have liked her to change her name several years into her career when she got married or when Tony Blair became famous sorry don't get it.

wheelsonthebus · 21/09/2007 11:38

her press office always insisted she was called Cherie Booth QC. Fiona Millar has made this point herself

OP posts:
wheelsonthebus · 21/09/2007 11:40

from The Guardian/

Fiona Millar: Sadly, Cherie Blair, as she now prefers to be known in spite of the months we spent persuading Downing Street officials that she should be allowed to put "Cherie Booth QC" on her headed notepaper - in order that she retain her separate identity - is leaving No 10 with a mixed reputation

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 21/09/2007 11:42

er, yes that's her professional name.
what's wrong with that?
she has been a barrister practising for 30 years. she was a QC before Tony was PM.
she is not an office holder of government or the Labour Party. she's written a book. she wants it to sell copies.
I really don't see what the problem is

margoandjerry · 21/09/2007 11:46

don't get the vitriol about her. She is Cherie Booth QC for good reasons relating to her work reputation but she is also very obviously married to the former PM so has to sustain both identities.

"You can't have it both ways" - well, seems to me she was just trying to maintain a career and be the First Lady - not a role she asked for herself.

I am dubious about her Carole Caplin antics but otherwise she's just a bloody successful working mother who is caught in a horrendous situation.

Hands up here who'd like to be First Lady and have to stare adoringly at their husband whatever he said and whatever he did when the facts are that he's never around and his career has just trumped yours despite the fact that you are rumoured to be more intelligent...

Piffle · 21/09/2007 11:48

well she is writing in her experience qas PM's wife, if it was a law book then she'd use her own name
easy

harpsichordcarrier · 21/09/2007 11:49

I agree margo. not just rumoured to be more intelligent either - she got a first, he got a second
she came top in her bar finals.
she got a pupillage first.

Spot on Wheels - I thought the exact same thing yesterday!

donnie · 21/09/2007 14:09

she rocks. She is drop dead clever and I like her. Sour grapes and envy here I think.

suzycreamcheese · 21/09/2007 14:15

..the people that will read it..probably..

great life story to be told, big irony..
her husband & govermnet set in place measures that endanger social mobility and higher education for brighter poorer kids..pulling up the rope ladder as they left..
...shame on them..

edam · 21/09/2007 14:23

Excellent point, Suzy. Current generation of kids like Cherie Booth just won't get the same opportunities.

edam · 21/09/2007 14:24

Oh, and she was not the First Lady. We don't have a First Lady but if we did, it would be the Queen, not the PM's wife.

NAB3 · 21/09/2007 14:29

Don't buy it!
