she always wanted to be called cherie booth, and be taken as an independent woman in her own right. Now it's Cherie Blair: The Autobiography because, presumably as wife of the ex-PM, you make more money with a book title like that. You can't have it both ways.

I don't think she ever said she was the First Lady. I was using it as shorthand for married to the PM. And when her husband went abroad to meet with, eg, Bush, she'd be tagging alongside the other partners such as Laura Bush who is, officially the First Lady so I think people tend to think of her under that title, and the media certainly use it.

thanks edam
...its just not justice ihmo....

Good luck to her, I say.

Financially, they didn't do well out of him becoming PM when he did.

They sold their Islington house and moved out of a rapidly rising market thus losing a lot of money. They could have held onto it but MI5 estimated it would cost hundreds of thousands to make the house 'secure'. They were entitled to have this done and charge it to the taxpayer as previous PMs have done. They declined and sold the house. On leaving Downing St,the house was estimated to be worth 750k more than they sold it for in '97.

I don't see any problem with her writing the book. Almost everyone else who's lived in that house has.

She's a clever cookie and a mother of four. I actually admire her.

What annoys me about Cherie Blair's autobiography is... that she wrote it. Full stop. Will not be buying it. I hate autobiographies as a genre anyway.

suzycreamcheese · 21/09/2007 18:13

cushioncover ..are you new labour member?
dont care about their finances at all .... they know that, its not the attraction for politicans..

she is the wife of a war criminal, thats all , to me..

harpsichordcarrier · 21/09/2007 22:51

I admire her greatly too, she has great intelligence and has carved out a very successful career for herself on her own merits. good for her.

krazykoolkazza · 22/09/2007 00:28

I can't really understand why anyone would want to rip into Cherie Blair for writing a book. After all, she's been beside one of the world's most promiment political figures for the last 10 years - why wouldn't she be entitled to think that her memoirs of her time in Downing Street might be intersting to others? Indeed, I think most people would find it quite oddd if she didn't write one.

Every triple-Z list celebrity no-mark writes a book about their totally banal existence these days (and half of them are barely out of their teens FFS!

And I hardly think it matters if she calls herself Cherie Booth or Cherie Blair - once people see her photo on the front cover and get a sniff of the subject matter it'll fly off the shelves. As I understand it her book is very eagerly anticipated.

I say good on her and good luck to her. She's a very successful woman who's achieved a lot in her life. I think she's always come across as caring, genuine and human.

I think her book will make for a jolly intersting read.

(And no, although I might sound like it, I'm not her literary agent!)

The bit about leaving the children is unnecessarily bitchy, even for the Telegraph (which this is from) but it seems like fair comment otherwise...I'm sure she is a lovely woman, but she comes across very badly.

so many people just cannot bear successful clever women who combine motherhood and a career.

UCM · 22/09/2007 11:51

What annoys me is that CB will get to make money out of being the wife of, IMHO, the worst PM this country has ever had the bad luck to have. It adds insult to injury. I truly do not believe that either of them ever really cared about this country, just what they could get out of it.

Don't buy it.

Oh and fwiw, I think she only called herself booth because her father was that actor in the 70's, quite famous at the time. But of course her husband is extremely famous now, so time to use Blair

donnie · 22/09/2007 11:53

but even if you think Blair was so awful UCM, it is a fact that Cherie always earned a lot more than him anyway.

donnie · 22/09/2007 11:53

I still like Tony!

WendyWeber · 22/09/2007 11:55

She "called" herself Booth because that was her name, UCM - most children do take their father's name, even these days

UCM · 22/09/2007 11:55

She will earn lots more now though. She probably planned this moment, the minute, he won the election.

donnie · 22/09/2007 12:02

OMG you are soooo horrid about her UCM !!

BecauseImWorthIt · 22/09/2007 12:23

Why shouldn't she earn lots of money?

What's the problem with that?
