popsycal · 15/08/2007 11:55

bbc link here

I read that as sarge only - and only ones with 7EA....

LIZS · 15/08/2007 11:58

I read it like that too popsycal.

popsycal · 15/08/2007 11:59

Email back from Mattel:

Thank you for your email. The only SARGE which is being recalled has a batch number which ends in 7EA. There are other SARGE cars available but they are not affected and are quite safe to retain. I hope this puts your mind at ease.

Kind regards

MerlinsBeard · 15/08/2007 12:00

aah right i misunderstood then. its Srage with aserial number of 7EA not ALL cars with 7EA at the end!

Phew!!

Finally found the other sarges and they have no serial numbers so assuming they are ok

popsycal · 15/08/2007 12:01

from the times:

The recall

UK: 1.9 million magnetic toys, including 53 Polly Pocket, 11 Doggie Day Care, 4 Batman products and 1 Barbie toy accessory.
UK and Ireland: 49,000 "Sarge" toy cars because of lead paint fears.
US: 9.5 million toys, including 7.3 million Polly Pocket sets, 683,000 Barbie accessories, 253,000 cars and 345,000 Batman magnetic action figure sets.
Worldwide: 18.2 million toys.

I've not yet had a reply to my email from yesterday

popsycal · 15/08/2007 12:02

MOM - my sarge has no serial number/....
email from mattel

Hi

Thank you for your email. The affected batch of SARGE cars have a batch number on the bottom, which ends in 7EA (eg, 0017 EA). This is the only batch of toys which is affected. If there is no number on the bottom, the cars have been supplied by a completely different manufacturer and are safe to keep.

popsycal · 15/08/2007 12:03

ACUTALLY - my emails are NOT from Mattel sorry.
They are from the Disney store where I purchased Sarge from.

MerlinsBeard · 15/08/2007 12:04

phew they boys play with these every day and its the only thing they will play together wothout fighting. i can't afford to replace them and still ge tthe rest of ds1s uniform and some food!

HUGE sigh of relief from the monster house!

popsycal · 15/08/2007 12:06

same here MOM - my two play beautifully with them mostof the time

SlightlyMadSpider · 15/08/2007 12:26

Bagpuss has had a reply.

She has to provide a telephone number so that someone can ring her to arrange a return and replacement.

HorseyWoman · 15/08/2007 15:17

Yes, the co-owner of the factory which makes toys for FisherPrice, which is owned by Mattel, did kill himself, byhanging I think. I am guessing he may have known that the paint he was using in his factory, was non-approved; but say he didn't realise his mistake (maybe doubtful), I am guessing he may still have had those suicidal thoughts and acted upon them, given the probable backlash from his neglect to comply to safety standards. It would probably have meant an end to his business and legal proceedings of some kind brought against him and his partner. I don't know whether he KNEW, but I do feel sad for him, his family, his partner; and I feel sorry for all those people that have to send back toys, but they should get replaced or refunded.

HorseyWoman · 15/08/2007 15:26

Well, mattel don't make the products; it was a factory in China, privately owned by 2 people, one of whom has now killed himself. I have heard that there have been safety scandals with other Chinese products - pet food and stuff. I also heard that the problem was not with the factory buying dodgy paint but with the paint supplier supplying dodgy paint. So the problem could be pretty widespread.

LIZS · 15/08/2007 17:04

I've had a reply. They will arrange for the dodgy products to be returned to them and then exchanged for alternatives .

popsycal · 15/08/2007 18:37

Just had email from mattel
my sarge was a smaller than usual diecast bought in a pair with sheriff (not the one listed) and has no information on the bottom

They want to have it back to check
