OP posts:
REBELlatrixlestrange · 12/07/2007 22:16

that's coz it's a Stokie oatcake, not aCastle oatcake.

Castle oatcakes are Staffs, and they just aint t'same.

(actually, have you had the North Staffs Oatcakes from the supermarkets? they're vile compared to Locketts, or Foley, or High Lane).

REBELlatrixlestrange · 12/07/2007 22:17

And yer, them Castillians do think they're berrer than us Stokies.

Salt o'the erth, us Stokies, lol.

islandofsodor · 12/07/2007 23:24

North Staffs Oatcakes YYYUUUKKKK!!!!!!!!!

High Lane YYYUUUUMMMMMMYYYYYY

Just spent all night up the City General. dh had his tonsils out today. LOADS OF patients smoking in the doorway.

REBELlatrixlestrange · 12/07/2007 23:33

You couldn't make it up, could you?

Unbelievable.

Hope DH is on the mend soon.

edam · 13/07/2007 13:32

My council forgot to do the paperwork when parking enforcement switched from police or whoever it was to local authorities. Was a free for all in St Albans for several months - people parked anywhere they liked. Absolute chaos.

They got the smoking ban powers in on time but then sent a publicity team to my local petrol station telling them not to allow smoking on the premises. Doh!

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 13/07/2007 13:33

hmm, am also strictly castillian....prefer wrights pies to oatcakes tho

REBELlatrixlestrange · 13/07/2007 14:35

DH bought Wrights Pies for lunch today.

He certainly knows how to treat a girl well.

pml.

saggermakersknockturnalley · 13/07/2007 15:48

Hope your dh isn't too sore IOS.

REBELlatrixlestrange · 13/07/2007 15:57

There was a letter in the local rag from a Castillian t'other night, praising the twins in BB ...but saying they're from Newcastle not Stoke, and i quote:

""I'm sure many more people from Newcastle also find this very irritating.""

rofl.

Just about to devour my Wrights Vanilla Slice.

islandofsodor · 13/07/2007 16:15

I saw that letter. To be honest I have always treated Stoke & Newcastle as the same though castle born people don't like that I know.

Dh is very sore today, apparently it gets worse before it gets better, day 3 will be a pig so the nurse said.

By the way, can I have some help filling in the mumsnet local pages please?

saggermakersknockturnalley · 13/07/2007 16:38

Those Castillians hate the fact they have to have Stoke on their child's birth certificate. When I worked at the Registry Office ( up 'anley duck) I was forever saying 'The Maternity hospital is in Stoke-on-Trent, if you're born there you're born in Stoke. Sorry lol'

OP posts:
REBELlatrixlestrange · 13/07/2007 16:44

rofl.

In the Town Hall? I used to work in the Town Hall, many years ago.

MaPickleLovesDinosaurs · 13/07/2007 22:36

Hanley was delightful ta for asking!!

Must admit to not being a Stokie though .. from York orig and now in a nearby town but worked in Hanley for nearly 5 years and lived there for a year before dropping the sprog.

islandofsodor · 13/07/2007 23:05

I don't have Stoke on my ds's birth certificate (born at home ha!)

Besides you are not supposed to go to Hanley to register if you are from castle. I did and found out I was wrong so had to wait for it to come through the post.

saggermakersknockturnalley · 14/07/2007 10:30

Did you do that on purpose IOS - just to avoid a Stokie offspring That's where folks get confused. It doesn't matter where you come from, it's where your baby is born. Born in the hospital - register up 'anley.

This was about seven years ago Rebel - maybe we crossed paths.

Don't go to 'anley much these days. It's a bit grim. lol at 'dropping the sprog'.

Have read this thread with a chuckle. Didn't realise there were so many Stokies around. Am originally from Longton myself, aka the "scrag end' iirc! Managed to find my way to Junction 15 of M6 and now live in Cheshire.

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 14/07/2007 10:49

I grew up in Longton too, then Meir, then Newcastle

Longton....

islandofsodor · 14/07/2007 10:51

I always knew Longton as Neck End!

In honour of this thread I am going to commission a mumsnet Stokie poem from my fil ( who writes performance poetry often about the local area). Copies of his CD Wit, Wisdom & Whistling Teeth are available from Dental records.

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 14/07/2007 10:53

Yup, I am familiar with the term "neck-ender" - and then moved to Newcastle and heard the term "castle black"

smugmumofboys · 14/07/2007 10:57

Neck end of course! My memory is playing tricks on me. Although "scrag"....! I went to school in Newcastle. It just seemed to be so posh. I was at school with all these girls from Westlands (?) Another world away from Longton.

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 14/07/2007 11:00

I went to NULS for 2 years too, horrible cliquey snobby dump.

saggermakersknockturnalley · 14/07/2007 11:33

I was born and bred ('til I was 6 or 7) in Cobridge - a proper Potter. I met a bloke a few years ago who said right away to me 'you were born in Cobridge'. He said he could tell where in Stoke people were born by their accent as there are slight differences. I do have a very strong accent - do my best to speak proper but it soon lapses.

I could claim to live in Staffs Moorlands if I move a mile up the road. So there

OP posts:
islandofsodor · 14/07/2007 11:41

My dd goes to NULS (well OH)

We are efinately not posh though. Brought up Burslem & Birches Head. Hubby a Tunstall lad.
