Anyone else feel Madeline Mccann story overplayed?

Tragic for her family and others who loved her.
I would never blame her parents for efforts they made to keep this in public mind.
The story obviously touched a lot of hearts.
But does it deserve so MUCH attention? In playgroups, schools, cinema, supermarket and street-corner notices a thousand miles away from where she disappeared?

Not trying to get on Sky news, nor am I a heartless b*tch. But I do get upset that so much attention and energy has been devoted to this topic when much worse and more important things are happening in the world.

Even among us parents, surely we should put this in more proportion?

Am I the only one thank thinks like that?

Why is my opinion 'odd'?
I think people need to look at this in the wider perspective.

binkleandflip · 03/07/2007 13:41

Up to Primark what she prays for at the end of the day - not that she does

Whatt is this rubbish? Of course what happened to poor little Madeleine is rare, but it happened. And it has happened like in this case: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Smart_kidnapping
I wonder if her poor parents had to endure these kind of disgusting accusations?
And this girl did come home nine months later. Why should the McCanns just give up?

Rhubarb · 03/07/2007 13:42

Did you not read my reply to you Primark? I find it odd because why do you care that we care?

wannaBe · 03/07/2007 13:45

she isn't less important, but why is she more important? because that would certainly seem to be the case.

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/07/2007 13:45

Poeple care about this one because they know about it. If they knew about others, they would care about them too I expect. Do you expect people to go trawling throught the internet to find more things that are upsetting, just so they are not upset about this one case?

dara · 03/07/2007 13:45

It seems that everything the McCanns are doing was done by Elizabeth Smart's parents - and they got their daughter back.

ie Ed and Lois Smart and their extended family persistently maintained a presence in the local and national media, fighting hard to keep Elizabeth's name in the press. They provided the media with home videos of her as both a teenager and as a child, and uploaded over twenty photos on a website which served as a resource center.

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/07/2007 13:46

Oooh, I missed off a 'just' there as well.

"...just this one case"

TaylorsMummy · 03/07/2007 13:47

primark, why try and change what you said? you didn't miss out a 'just' you said you wouldn't pray for madeleine as there were 'far more important cases'

why not just stick by what you meant?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 03/07/2007 13:49

I am very sorry if I have offended anyone, but I must say anyone who claims to be genuinely offended is just deluding themselves. Unless you are a member of this family you have no idea of what they are going through and no business getting shirty about it.

I am personally involved in a very small charity in the country I was born in. There children are snatched from their beds on a regular basis, beg on the streets and are 'pimped' in cities such as london. In some cases their families are so desperate and clueless thy willingly hand their children over, thinking they will have a better life.
I cannot feel sorry for one middle class family who made an error of judgement and have lost their child as a result.

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/07/2007 13:50

"I cannot feel sorry for one middle class family who made an error of judgement and have lost their child as a result."

Truly.

Again, that is a pretty odd thing to say. Is your compassion finite?

dara · 03/07/2007 13:50

So a white middle class child is worth less than a child from another country? Isn't that racist?

Rhubarb · 03/07/2007 13:51

Primark, get off your high horse!

I too am involved with a chinese charity that rescues children thrown out on the streets to die because they are girls, or disabled.

Yet I can still feel empathy with the McCanns whether or not they are middle class, which is such a trite thing to say anyway! I don't understand your point at all, you are getting angry over people caring about this? You are not making sense but are digging yourself a bigger hole than I think you intend.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 03/07/2007 13:52

Again. to cushion my words for those who will jump on them. It is very sad, and I cannot imagine what her parents are going through, but there are for more newsworthy things happening that just aren't covered.
News is ll about scaremongering and heartstring pulling these days. It is a shame.

LaBoheme · 03/07/2007 13:53

gosh what a truly horrible thing to say, this gets worse...

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/07/2007 13:54

You really need to read your words carefully before you post, because you are losing some valid points by saying things which make you sound, to be frank, pretty heartless. And I very much doubt that is the case.

ThomCat · 03/07/2007 13:54

What's the fact that they are middle class got to do with anything? Whatever their persoanl details are, what they do, where they are from etc how can you possibly say you don't feel sorry for them having lost a child. Oh, I'm truly shocked. That'll teach me to come on to one of these threads. I knew I should stay away. These threads really do seem to bring out the worst in some people

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 03/07/2007 13:55

Well yes and the many children who go begging in Milan or London, then end up bing deported and just dumped literally as they get off the plane.
These are things that should be publicised. Why waste pages on a supposed kidnap story when it is no news at all?

LucyJones · 03/07/2007 13:56

Agree with Thomcat.
You are not coming across at all well on this thread TDWP.

binkleandflip · 03/07/2007 13:56

You should stay away if your are sensitive ThomCat, because everyone is entitled to their say whether you agree or not.

Public forum and all that

LucyJones · 03/07/2007 13:57

'supposed kidnap story'
please parp yourself

Rhubarb · 03/07/2007 13:57

Yes Primark, there are, as a member of Amnesty too I am only too aware of the horrors of this world. But you cannot shut your eyes to the pain of one family just because they are middle class or don't fit your usual 'victim' stereotype. If you are involved with a charity then you will know all about empathy and treating everyone with the same dignity and equality no matter what walk of life they come from. And everyone's problem is important to them. You could come across someone who has just lost a child, and then in the next hour you will be talking to someone whose dog has just been run over. It might not be as important to you, but it is to them.

You shouldn't judge anyone Primark, if you do then you certainly shouldn't be working in the charitable sector.

dara · 03/07/2007 13:58

And you think if everyone ignored Madeliene's plight then the pages would be full of those stories eh? You are so wrong.
So far Madeleine's abduction has put child abduction right at the heart of the news, and led directly to the arrest of two child abusers and possibly the breakup of their trafficking business. Not a bad result, I'd say.
