I am sure if they had thought it would save him they'd have done it or tried it.

Desiderata · 25/06/2007 17:13

I'm not sure that amputations, shock and hypothermia are a good mix ... and I doubt the foot was accessible anyway.

Poor, poor man. Somebody's son.

2shoes · 25/06/2007 17:34

that so just sad and tragic. poor poor man

kel4mum · 25/06/2007 17:36

Dreadful news, that poor man.

My thoughts go out to his family.

paulaplumpbottom · 25/06/2007 17:37

Thats awful

LadyTophamHatt · 25/06/2007 17:41

amputating a leg in flood water would proabably cause all sorts of infections too.

Poor man.

j20baby · 25/06/2007 18:27

He was named on our local news, people had gone under water to try and free him without the correct equipment, but just couldn't do it. we're all being advised not to leave our houses round here now, as if i would anyway!

JodieG1 · 25/06/2007 20:36

Personally I'd take the risk of infection, shock etc over certain death. I'm not saying that anyone did anything wrong either just that had I been him I would really have wanted it amputated no matter what. Given a choice of definite death or maybe death I'd always go for the maybe. Really feel for his family, it didn't say whether he had a wife or children, really feel for them if he did.

Beauregard · 25/06/2007 20:39

Poor man

Frizbe · 25/06/2007 20:39
Sad
gulp · 25/06/2007 20:40

but how could they have amputated it UNDER water? by what means? poor man.

Aloha · 25/06/2007 20:40

And who exactly would be doing the cutting off his foot thing? The milkman? YOu can't just say to a fireman 'oh, get down there and cut his foot off'.
I am sure that everything that could have been done, was done. It is an absolutely tragic accident.

Aloha · 25/06/2007 20:40

He was down a manhole!

expatinscotland · 25/06/2007 20:40

Oh, that is SO sad .

Hulababy · 25/06/2007 20:44

I ams till very sure that if amputation had been a viable option they'd have done it. After all these people are the experts in rescuing other people.

Very tragic

ELF1981 · 25/06/2007 20:46

Jesus, just seen this, this is shocking, that poor man

BrassicMonkey · 25/06/2007 20:49

What a tragedy

Not sure I agree about choosing amputation over death (assuming that was an option). It's easy to say that when you're not facing the possibility of it, but I'm not sure I could make that decision in a real life situation. Poor bloke.

JodieG1 · 25/06/2007 20:52

I thought it was a drain and not a manhole, if it was a manhole then someone could have got to him from the next nearest and gone underneath to him so that's why I assumed it wasn't one. It's not clear from the report as it just says drain. Like I said though I don't think anyone's at fault and it's very sad.

JodieG1 · 25/06/2007 20:55

BM - really? I thought most people would choose life over death in the majority of circumstances. I wouldn't want to leave my 3 kids behind so would definitely go for the amputation if it was an option.

BrassicMonkey · 25/06/2007 20:57

How can you say what you would definitely do though? He was probably suffering terribly, freezing cold, out of his mind with fear. I think I would just as likely die of a heart attack if I had to face the possibility of having my foot amputated under those circumstances.

Hulababy · 25/06/2007 21:09

If it was a flooded manhole, there is no way someone could have gone to the next manhole, travelled through it under water and then performed an amputation on this man whilst under water!

j20baby · 25/06/2007 21:09

some reports are saying manholes, but it looked like his foot had been caught in a large grate, someone tried to cut his welly off as they thought it was that what was stuck, but it was actually his foot. can't find out how he actually died though, whether it was drowning or hypothermia or something different.

JodieG1 · 25/06/2007 21:52

Bm - can't say for sure but that's my thoughts on it now

Hula - I was thinking diving gear or similar if that was the case but I didn't think manhole anyway

j20baby - it's so sad what happened Wondering how his foot was stuck so that it couldn't get out

Hulababy · 25/06/2007 21:56

But you can't operate in diving gear, surely?

tiredemma · 25/06/2007 21:57

I would imagine that hypothermia and shock would have been the main contributers to his death.
