just been on the news that he did actually drown when the water rose over his head

tiredemma · 25/06/2007 22:05

what a horrible way to die.

saffy202 · 25/06/2007 22:05

Poor man
Must admit I immediately thought of Casualty too, was scarily similar.

gibal · 25/06/2007 22:06

awful.
he was quite young as well 20s., helping his grandad..seems more poignant..

WendyWeber · 25/06/2007 22:37

I also read that it was his grandad, but then elsewhere that he worked at a fish farm and the owner was 75.

He was in a drain (maybe down a manhole), at or near the fish farm, and his foot got stuck in a grating. Under normal circs it would probably have been fixable. Nearby people were knocking walls down to lower the water level around him. Just appalling for all concerned but what a nice guy he must have been.

It was a storm drain - a big open ditch in other words. There are large grates like cattle grids at the bottom of them in places and it was one of those his foot was caught in.

The only way they could have got him out would be to cut the grate - the were trying to get oxyacetyline equipment there when he died.

He was 28, it happened near his granddad's home (nowhere near a fish farm incidently).

I'm local and I know those drains well. You could normally step over the puddle of water in the bottom of them if you wanted to.

Poor bloke

it seems extraordinary he couldn't get his foot out. It must have been the force of the water or something. desperately sad and very strange.

suedonim · 26/06/2007 16:54

I was talking to dh about this. He has naval and off-shore experience and reckons there is equipment that could have been used in this situation. But as it's specialised maybe it wasn't available to the rescuers.

I think we're so used to a 'Can do' attitude from our emergency workers that it comes as shock when despite their best efforts there's no happy ending.

SaintGeorge · 26/06/2007 16:57

I think that was the gear they were trying to get to the scene suedonim. I said oxywotsit but I think it might be called plasma arc or something like that. Means they can cut or weld underwater.

Pinkchampagne · 26/06/2007 17:14

How tragic.

suedonim · 26/06/2007 17:25

That could be it, StG.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 26/06/2007 17:47

I think he died of hypothermia/heart attack rather than drowning. Thats the impression I got from last night's news. Awful.

Sorry, I said earlier it happened nowhere near a fish farm. Doh, there's me thinking salmon/trout, I forgot about the Coi Farm.

His dad is distraught because the emergency services wouldn't let him through to the scene. They told him to go home, he put on the tv and saw the news saying his son was dead.

j20baby · 26/06/2007 18:33

i think he worked at a local fish factory, apparantly a few of them had volunteered to get rid of some of the rubbish at the drain, i assume because it was obstructing the water from draining properly, but then they said he was helping his grandfather, so don't know which is true
