will the west make some kind of gesture towards the dispossessed Palestinians and resume payments to the Palestinian authority? or are we happy to let Israel continue their illegal occupation ?

two hours on - and not a single comment. Well I guess that's an accurate reflection of wider political feeling then. How sad.

Maybe folk don't want to have an argument? It's not like the OP isn't quite clear in it's position. Either people agree with your position, or they don't want to butt heads. I'm sure you could probably get a full thread of 'I agree' posts if you keep bumping, though.

errr....what?

OP posts:
Desiderata · 04/06/2007 18:23

Ok, donnie - since your itching for a discussion on this, what would you like the west to do?

At the very least, this might bump your question up so that someone with an interest might respond.

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:29

I would like the west to do the following:

  • stop selling arms to Israel

-recommence payments via the world bank to the Palestinian Authority

  • pressure for immediate programme of dismatling all illegal settlements

  • pressure for withdrawal from occupied territory including the Golan Heights

-pressure for dismantling of the wall which is annexing more Palestinian land

  • Force Israel to recognise a viable Palestinian state.

plus a few other things. And you?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 04/06/2007 18:30

yes dismantle that bloody wall for a starters

Tinker · 04/06/2007 18:31

Aren't most people just going to agree with all this though?

SueBaroo · 04/06/2007 18:34

OK. And what do the Palestinians have to do? Stop getting Mickey Mouse to encourage their kids to kill themselves?

SueBaroo · 04/06/2007 18:35

Tinker, that's what I thought, and thought that was why donnie didn't get much of a response...

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:35

I have no idea what you mean suebaroo but you sound totally ignorant on the subject.

OP posts:
SueBaroo · 04/06/2007 18:39

donnie, do I? Because I didn't just sagely nod at your list?

You didn't see the mickey mouse character on Palestinian television a few weeks back? Crikey, even the BBC picked up on this one.

MaureenMLove · 04/06/2007 18:42

I think you may have picked the wrong website to discuss this type of subject. Whilst many of us have views on politics, I think you'll find that most people on here, want to discuss parenting issues. I know there is an 'In the News' section, but I think this sort of thing is best left to a political website and not a parenting forum. I don't think you'll get a whole lot of comments on here, sorry.

Bubble99 · 04/06/2007 18:44

Parp.

These threads always get nasty.

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:44

this thread is pointless I see. I genuinely thought people would have something to say about the fact it is now exactly 40 years since the six day war, but clearly not.

Next Saturday - June 9th. March for Palestine. If anyone cares, that is.

OP posts:
Desiderata · 04/06/2007 18:45

donnie, I need to ask this. Are you Palestinian? Or a member of the academia?

Bubble99 · 04/06/2007 18:46

donnie. You are known for your rabid anti-Israeli stance. Not a great springboard for a calm and balanced debate, is it?

southeastastra · 04/06/2007 18:46

there are tons of threads on the palestine/israel situation, people just don't want to talk about parenting here.

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:48

why do you need to ask, desiderata?

'rabid' - ???

OP posts:
MaureenMLove · 04/06/2007 18:48

Yeah, I realise that SEA, but this one seems a bit heavier than the rest I've seen! Maybe I haven't been around long enough to notice....

Tinker · 04/06/2007 18:48

Quite. There is no problem with this subject being discussed here but the tone of teh OP and the subsequent posts have been somewhat aggressive or hostile - not exactly lending themselves to debate.

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:50

tinker - do you regard the occupation as legal? as far as I am aware I have only cited facts thus far. feel free to correct them.

OP posts:
Bubble99 · 04/06/2007 18:51

donnie. You seem (or maybe I'm just, quite literally, reading you wrong?) to be so aggressive about this whole subject.

donnie · 04/06/2007 18:54

not aggressive but in despair. And amazed that everyone does not feel the same which I agree is stupid. I can't help it though. I see suffering and oppression and Blair and Bush letting it and encouraging it to happen.

Anyway since I am clearly a lone voice here I guess I'd better take it elsewhere.

OP posts:
Desiderata · 04/06/2007 18:54

I need to ask because I think it's important to know whether you are Palestinian.

I have no interest in the subject, for what it's worth. None whatsoever.

If you're from Palestine, with first hand experience of Israeli aggression, then I must accede to your point of view.

If you're a British academic, then I think you're bang out of order.

That's why I want to know.

But I don't want to know that much.
