Hi everyone,
Just to reassure you we don't tolerate personal attacks and will delete such posts when they are reported. We have also banned OnlyinAmerica, who we can confirm was also posting under the name thirtiesmum and Dora74. (We wouldn't normally out people in this way, but seeing as she expressly asked us to confirm that she didn't have any aliases on this thread...)

We agree that the Madeleine McCann tragedy has spawned some very unpleasant and unsupportive comment on Mumsnet and we (and we hope you) will continue to remind people of the MN philosophy, namely that we're here to make parents' lives easier, not the reverse.

We do continue to hold the view, however, people have the right to express controversial opinions and debate the issues here, as much as elsewhere. Of course where that crosses the line into personal attacks/ troll-like flaming we are more than happy to delete things so please do report anything you consider to have crossed the line and we promise to look at it and deal as promptly as we can.

Just to clarify - for those of you who were confused - the poster posting as MNHQ was not, in fact, anyone from MNHQ...

Clear as mud I know..

And no, all the Madeleine threads are not being pulled.

And yes folks can start a new news one if they want to, though please, if you do, could you make sure someone flags Justine's comments about the MN philosophy somewhere near the OP.

Do bear in mind that unless someone reports comments that breach our abuse policy, we don't necessarily see them to consider them for deletion. A reminder also that we are here to help - shouting at people who want to discuss something you don't, isn't that helpful now is it?
