I am really pro fair trade chocolate (and as said on another thread, am completely addicted to the M&S rose scented organic fair trade chocolate. BUT! Maltesers! I really don't want rennet with my Maltesers and I cannot live without Maltesers. Expensive chocolate is all very well, but Maltesers! THere's no alternative.

thelady · 15/05/2007 16:32

Hmm: "veggie rennet" is an enzyme produced by genetically modified micro-organisms.

Non-veggie rennet is the same enzyme which is found in suckling calves stomachs.

Both are used to curdle milk products. There is no trace of the rennet left in the things you eat (whether that's cheese or anything else).

I don't know why they're using rennet at all to make chocolate, mind you!

I gave my DDs this news yesterday. I will be interested to see if their committment to vegetarianism continues or if Maltesers will win.

Bohemianbint - exactly the same scenario here last week with salt and vinegar snack a jacks - read the packet halfway through It's salt and vinegar FFS!

The online petition isn't working today.

SweetyDarling · 15/05/2007 22:00

Boogie, for a cow to produce milk its calf is slaughtered. That's basically the only reason we have veal.
So I just don't get the argument of not eating meat (esp people who only refuse to eat veal) but then eating dairy products.

AllBuggiedOut · 16/05/2007 14:06

Petition working again today.

thelady · 16/05/2007 14:45

SweetyDarling: Can I just pick you up on a factual inaccuracy.

For a cow to give milk, a calf is required to be born. Many suckler calves are weaned and added to the dairy herds, rather than being slaughtered. Male calves are generally slaughtered, as they are of little commercial use to the dairy farmer (for obvious reasons), but it is definitely not true to say that every cow giving milk equals a dead calf!

SweetyDarling · 16/05/2007 20:35

No, but certainly significantly more than 50%.

Cazee · 16/05/2007 22:43

Every cow giving milk = a dead cow, that is for sure. As soon as their milk supply begins to suffer they kill them. Given the misery of having their baby calf taken away year after year they are probably glad to be dead.

AllBuggiedOut · 20/05/2007 23:42

Suspect you have all seen this, but in case not, Masterfoods back down

OtterInnit · 20/05/2007 23:48
