Elizabeth I, Violette Szabo (British agent, the film Carve Her Name with Pride was made about her life), Ang Sang Sui thingy (sorry can never get spelling right, utterly heroic woman), Helen Bamber, the woman who founded the Medical Foundation for The Victims of Torture, loads of writers, eg Rebecca West, Julie Christie and Helen Mirren are interesting women who are still very vivid in their 60s, Gareth Pierce and Helena Kennedy.

DeviousDaffodil · 01/05/2007 14:46

LOL olive I loved that on dead ringers!
I admire Sandi Toksvig for her wit.
Cherie Blair is a good role model.
She has a career and a family.

Rosa Parks is really famous though! Huge figure in the civil rights movement, one of the key political movements of the 20th century.

GythaOgg · 01/05/2007 14:48

Not just American history

oliveoil · 01/05/2007 14:48

well excuse me!

KezzaG · 01/05/2007 14:49

I chose Ellen M but agree she does appear quite boring. I think that is the problem, all of these women have made great achievements, overcome difficulty, suceeded in their field and so on, but do any of them really capture the imagination of a young female today? Im not sure they do.

when you compare them with the media driven images and supposed exciting lifestyles of popstars, film stars etc or the instant fame of reality tv stars some of these women do seem quite dull.

When I was young I wanted to be in Bananarama not an MP.

Blandmum · 01/05/2007 14:49

Helen Keller. A major advocate for the proper education of Deaf Blind people.

Rosalind Frankin, the 'real' scientist behind the discovery of the structure of DNA and TMV, sadly died before she gained recognition.

oliveoil · 01/05/2007 14:50

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Taylormama · 01/05/2007 14:50

Marie Curie

Blandmum · 01/05/2007 14:51

Changing all of genetics not enough for you?

DeviousDaffodil · 01/05/2007 14:53

Why should the likes of Ellen Macarther not be boring.
She has made a fantastic achievement.
Maybe sh should have whippeed her tits out on the finishing line to make herslef more 'interesting'.

Aloha · 01/05/2007 14:53

I think all sport is boring tbh. But that's just my thing.

GythaOgg · 01/05/2007 14:54

I thought you'd gone Olive.

Gah, if I had a better connection speed I could really get stuck into this topic.

By the time I've typed something out, then tapped my fingers while it goes through, everything has moved on.

What's boring about a strong, intelligent, independant, strong-minded, courageous young woman????????

Marina · 01/05/2007 14:55

Several of these have been mentioned already

Elizabeth Butler-Sloss
Bel Mooney (co-founded SANDS amongst other achievements)
Shami Chakrabarti
Jo Brand
Joanna McGregor
Segolene Royal
Jenny Tonge
Sheila McKechnie
Mary Warnock

and going back in time

Rosa Parks
Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst

DeviousDaffodil · 01/05/2007 14:56

Isn't it funnt but if a woman does something incredible she is slated for beoing boring, single minded. If a man sails around the world he is a hero, strong and assertive.

Porcupine · 01/05/2007 14:56

sailign is dull

OP posts:
oliveoil · 01/05/2007 14:57

Porcupine · 01/05/2007 14:57
