It may be dull. But she is still a good role model.
You can't take that away from her.

Aloha · 01/05/2007 14:59

I find all sporting achievement very, very dull. Except John Curry ice-skating, which was dancing really.
Martha Graham
Diana Vreeland
Else Schiapareli
Jane Austen
Gloria Steinhem

GythaOgg · 01/05/2007 15:00

"when you compare them with the media driven images and supposed exciting lifestyles of popstars, film stars etc or the instant fame of reality tv stars some of these women do seem quite dull."

We don't have a television so dd isn't exposed to any of that crap at the moment.

Right now she is totally enamoured with Daphne Sheldrick , who to my knowledge has never got her norks out or appeared on Big Brother

DrNortherner · 01/05/2007 15:08

But I don't want to be like anoy of these women. Esp Sandi Toksvig and Ellen chuffin McCarther..

A good role model should at least were a decent lipstick

oliveoil · 01/05/2007 15:09

Sandi Toksvig is funny (I read MIL's Good Housekeeping and IIRC she has a column)

but non of these people make me think WOW (not that I have heard of half of them)

DrNortherner · 01/05/2007 15:12

Born in Poverty in the deep south in the 1920, raped at 8 by her mothers lover, a single mother and a teengers who once worked as a protitute and a madame, Maya Angelou has done all this;-

'Angelou is known for the autobiographical writings I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) and All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes (1986). Her volume of poetry, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Die (1971) was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and in 1993, Angelou read her poem On the Pulse of Morning during Bill Clinton's Presidential inauguration. It was only the second time in U.S. history that a poet had been asked to read at an inauguration, the first being Robert Frost at the inauguration of John F. Kennedy.

Besides poetry, Angelou has published collections of verse, and has contributed to periodicals in the United States and abroad. A polyglot, Angelou speaks several languages besides her native English, including French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic and Ghanian Fante.

Angelou has been honored by numerous academic institutions throughout her career. She has been awarded a fellowship by Yale University, and also served as a Rockefeller Foundation Scholar in Italy. Angelou has taught at the University of Ghana, University of Kansas, and at Wake Forest University, where she holds a lifetime chair as the Z. Smith Reynolds Professor of American Studies. For several years Angelou has delivered an opening address to the incoming freshman class of Duke University. Although Angelou has, in her later career, received several honorary doctorates, she never received a college education.

Outside of academica, Angelou has achieved recognition for her poetry from bodies honoring achievement in music and theater. She has received a nomination for the Tony Awards, and in 1993 won the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for On the Pulse of Morning. In 2005, Angelou was honored by Oprah Winfrey at her "Legends Ball" along with 25 other African-American women whom Winfrey considered inspirational.'

Oh and once worked with Martin Luter King in the civil Rights movement.

And if that lot isn't inspirational, I don't know what is!

bundle · 01/05/2007 15:17

we are big Mary Seacole fans in our house

and I personally think Jocelyn Bell Burnell hasn't had the recognition she deserves

bundle · 01/05/2007 15:21

yacketyblah · 01/05/2007 15:57

Mary Wollstonecraft
Jane Austen
Harper Lee
Mo Mowlam and
Sinead O Connor

agree with jung chang, what a life, and a great writer

MKG · 01/05/2007 19:06

Oprah Winfrey

Wilbur · 01/05/2007 19:18

I was just going to add Elizabeth Butler-Sloss but see that Marina has beat me to it. Also like Shami Chakrabati - I really admire her for her ability to remain apolitical and fight with and bgain respect from people from both sides of the political divide. Others would be Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, the woman in Mozambique who gave birth up a tree during the floods (I think her name was Sophie or she called the baby Sophie), Aphra Behn, Renee Fleming and a host of others.

Swizzler · 01/05/2007 19:44

And lots in the media: Libby Purves, Jenny Murray (in fact the whole cast of Women's Hour ), Sandi Toksvig, Jo Brand, the late and much lamented Linda Smith...

mummytosteven · 01/05/2007 19:53

Helena Kennedy
Temple Grandin
Toni Morrison
Maya Angelou

sarz · 01/05/2007 20:21

Lola (as in Charlie and)!! Although i think their parents are a waste of space leaving everything to poor Charlie!

Regarding Ellen M- I do think what she did was boring, i wouid think the same if it were a male, although i cant actually recall a man who has done the same ( i am sure there are men, i just dont remember any!) What makes here a role Model IMO is her courage and independence.

Regarding Kate Moss- Why anybody would cue for her clothes is beyond me, why anybody is still employing her is beyond me. And what the hell happened to her daughter? she must be about 3yrs now? If that was a 'normal' mum who had a drugie boyfriend, allegedly taking drugs herself and generally an unfit mother surely social services would be involved??

edam · 01/05/2007 20:26

I only found out the other week that Millicent Fawcett and Elizabeth Garret Anderson were sisters. And had eight siblings. Amazing family. Their father was well-known too, he was important in the development of steam locomotives.

Today, I'd say Aung San Suu Kyi, Helen Mirren and maybe Amy Tan.
