Just woken to news on radio of house in California where police have rescued a family of 11 children whose parents have allegedly chained them to beds and walls after the eldest 17 yo girl escaped. Horrible.

Thanks. (I just ordered the Alaskan book)
The more exposure children have to other people, neighbours, friends, extended family, school of course the better.

I had never heard of Papa Pilgrim before today

Exciting the suggestion of sexual abuse is not to do with the mere fact of having a large family. The fact that your great granny came from a large family and there was no abuse is completely irrelevant.

The likelihood that there was sexual abuse in this case is high because of the circumstances where it was already clear that there was a high degree of extreme physical and emotional abuse. The subsequent criminal charges sadly bear this out.

I’d also wonder how many children didn’t survive.

What a brave brave girl who escaped and raised the alarm. That Guardian piece stated she had been planning it for 2 years.

Yes, good point. The isolation adds to the risks too. One of the sons had glasses on a photo so I suspect over the years they just got more and more cut off. Some did not know what a police officer was.
Eg in the US FLDS religious group the older teenagers who had had access to mainstream schools when young had a better idea of the outside world and were better educated, than those at their own religious school or educated at home when things got more extreme under Warren Jeffs.

They could have bought those glasses at a supermarket, with no eye exam. You can buy 'reading glasses' that are marked +.75, +1, +1.25, +1.5, +2..up to +3 off a stand in many supermarkets, Walgreens, Walmart, etc. You try them on, see what works with small print...

Clawdy · 22/01/2018 09:43

That's only reading glasses, though, and not the sort of glasses you wear for sight problems which require use when walking around.

mathanxiety · 22/01/2018 20:37

My guess is that that child never had an eye exam and that his vision is so poor from malnutrition that he is basically walking into things. Either they bought him glasses at Walmart or at Goodwill.

Some reports say that they're getting ready to bring cadaver dogs in to the property.

Others are saying that they hadn't actually done DNA tests on the kids (though this is from papers like the Express and the Mail, so take with a pinch of salt). If true, and given the circumstances, why would they not have ascertained straight away whether the kids are the biological children of both parents? The narrative is confusing though, admittedly: I'm sure I read elsewhere that during a press conference the authorities confirmed that all of the kids (and adults in this case) were the children of David and Louise?

MerryMarigold · 23/01/2018 10:28

Yes, I'm pretty sure you can get dna tests through v quickly if needed. The first thought in such abuse would have been: are any of these kids the product of incest, particularly before they brought the first round of charges. I think it's such a compelling story and people are wanting more and more so it's a bit barrel-scapey now.

MerryMarigold · 23/01/2018 10:28

Barrel-scrapey ie they are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

There is a suggestion that the Turpins were planning to move within a few days, apparently to Oklahoma, which may have precipitated the escape of the 17 year old.

In the videos on youtube of the kids at their parents vow renewals you can clearly see how the eldest girl can barely stand up straight and her coordination is lacking, poor girl (the kids are being told to dance by the Elvis impersonator) The middle boy doesn't seem to look at anything, which leads me to suspect he's either really traumatised, or could even be blind. Thank God they are now in a place of safety!
