Just woken to news on radio of house in California where police have rescued a family of 11 children whose parents have allegedly chained them to beds and walls after the eldest 17 yo girl escaped. Horrible.

Very odd. Very culty - boys have same "hairstyle" as the dad. Apparently he was on about £124,000 in 2011.

For the parents to go from normal to bat crap, something must have happened to trigger this drastic change in behavior.

The neighbour's said '........they were suspicious of the situation.' to quote an article on Sky News app. So why did they not inform the authorities ?

Because that’s not the American way. People try and help each other rather than involving the Authorities. People here deeply distrust the government.

BarbarianMum · 16/01/2018 14:50

Nothing I've seen so far suggests this family was ever "normal". You can be weird and controlling and still take your kids to Disney.

MoonfaceAndSilky · 16/01/2018 14:53

The neighbours saw the kids going down bins at night ffs and they didn't think to tell anyone?

MissEliza · 16/01/2018 15:05

The neighbours seem very happy to get their faces on the news but not one person said 'I feel terrible this was going on and I didn't know.'

Lovemusic33 · 16/01/2018 15:08

No body said anything because that’s what people do Sad, sometimes people get a inkling that something isn’t right but they are to scared to say anything as they don’t want to beleive it themselves. How many times do we see things that don’t seem right?

dingdongdigeridoo · 16/01/2018 15:56

They have child protective services in America, our version of social services, but they are apparently crap. I have family in the US who suspected a neighbour of abuse, and CPS will usually do nothing unless it's very extreme circumstances. So the neighbours probably knew the kids were neglected, but not enough to involve the authorities. It's a terrible situation, and with all the cuts to our services, I see the UK going the same way.

Plus there seem to be a lot of these big weird homeschool families who have absolutely no oversight or involvement with schools, doctors etc. They can slip through the cracks so easily.

SmashingCucurbita · 16/01/2018 18:37

Those poor children.
People don’t say anything Daniel pelka is a name that springs out with reference to children eating out of bins.
I can’t help thinking there’s a good chance the children’s ages don’t add up. But I hope I’m completely wrong.
Just awful

friendlyflicka · 16/01/2018 19:09

Shouldn't FB take down the page is situations like this? Surely the children need as much anonymity as possible.

shakeyourcaboose · 16/01/2018 20:29

Agree flicka too much chance for people to add even more damage with comments etc

the kids in the 'thing' photo look pretty thin, tbf.

MissConductUS · 16/01/2018 21:18

Some Americans distrust the government and some don't. I think it's more accurate to say that most don't want to involve the authorities without solid information to back up their concerns. And where there is distrust in government I think it's more about the governments ability to do big things, like manage the economy, not investigate individual cases of potential child abuse. Even so, CPS (Child Protective Services - the name varies by state and municipality) gets lots of reports from non-family members.

iamzzz · 16/01/2018 21:33

Odd. Poor children!

lljkk · 16/01/2018 22:11

So very sad. :(
Agree that the pictures from 5-6 yrs ago, don't look like any of the kids could be age 16-23. So even then, something was very wrong.

I'm trying to hold onto the very good thing that at last their ordeal has ended (and hopefully their bastard parents will be punished.)

lljkk · 16/01/2018 22:15

ps: Anyone else read The Glass Castle?

It's funny how a loving family can be a neglected family can be a loving neglected family.

MissEliza · 17/01/2018 08:08

People try and help each other why didn't they help these children then?

ps: how big the teeth are in CPS depends on the state; CA CPS have pretty big teeth. My mom was a CPS worker in CA. Crazy overworked, though, they can't act on rumour and they don't have resources to go looking for maybe abusers.

mogloveseggs · 17/01/2018 08:27

What stuck me was how pale they all are. The parents don’t look that pale, it’s like they don’t see sunlight. So very sad, I hope they can recover from this and go on to lead happy healthy lives.

BerylStreep · 17/01/2018 09:24

The mother is 49, so whilst it is possible, it is probably unlikely that the 2 year old is hers. [Sad]

bummypicklemummy · 17/01/2018 09:30

Disgusting fb left the profile up that long.

Clawdy · 17/01/2018 09:41

The police investigation has said categorically that all the 13 children are the biological children of the accused parents, and that there is no evidence of any sexual abuse.

BerylStreep · 17/01/2018 09:59

Clawdy, I hadn't seen that. Although I'm surprised at the speed with which they have been able to say that.

YerAuntFanny · 17/01/2018 10:02

I think sadly they've had to rush through some of the process because the conspiracy theorists and armchair detectives have started to form their own version of events already which doesn't help anyone.

Also the way that people have violated the children's privacy by rushing to analyse photos although with that said they should have taken that before releasing any details.

SuperBeagle · 17/01/2018 10:03

I assume there must be documentation to support the children all being the biological children of David and Louise.

DNA etc. takes much longer than that.
