Nothing surprises me about hsbc. UNfortunately both me and dh have accounts with them but I can't be bothered to change. They have never been particularly helpful.

banks are suppposed to provide a basic bank account

obviously they just offer a minimal service to go with it

zippitippitoes · 12/04/2007 11:44

ds has had a nationwide account for ages..he was at school to start with and they invited him to open a flexaccount instead of smile or something so he did and they put 10.00 in it

a few months later they wrote and asked hime to open a flexaccount so he closed the one he had and opened another and they put 10.00 in it

he has done this 4 times

so there are accounts for people without money

zippitippitoes · 12/04/2007 11:48

of course ds is the sort of wide boy who needs a war to maximise his income

I am lucky enough to be a Premier account holder with HSBC and have been for a few years.
I would never expect to be treated differently by staff than those who aren't. I knew we had different numbers to ring but i thought that was just because we are assigned our own account manager and always have to speak to them about our accounts.
I think its really bad and just another way to make a difference between the rich and poorer

DimpledThighs · 12/04/2007 11:58

a premier account holder is treated much differently IME - no waiting, much more polite and quickly able to understand what you want and don't offer any pther crap. The people you speak to are much more experienced.

in admiration of your ds's savvy zippi!

I have been contemplating changing for a while now but didn't want hassle with changing Direct Debits etc however this has the potential to change my mind.

Edinburgh used to have a "ladies only" branch of The Royal Bank of Scotland. Think it is closed now.

There is also a HSBC Premier branch in Canary Wharf.
