bastards.

Saturn74 · 12/04/2007 11:04

I think we should all support Ken Pottle of the Neighbourhood Watch.

southeastastra · 12/04/2007 11:05

is that legal then what about pensioners!

TheArmadillo · 12/04/2007 11:05

Isn't this the same bank who only let rich customers talk to phone operators in this country while the rest speak to foreign call centers?

They seem like they only want rich customers now and any one else can f off.

I liked the bit about not abandoning their other customers - they can use a cash/deposit machine.

Wonder how much the other customers feel valued by their bank now and how amny will be closing their accounts (if they can get to a branch that will let them in that is).

I think they're gonna lose a lot of customers over this.

nailpolish · 12/04/2007 11:06

i cant remember the last time i stepped inside a bank

just do it by phone or online

custy · 12/04/2007 11:06

it was on our local news last night - they did say that it might be breaching some FSA rules. about fairness

OP posts:
DimpledThighs · 12/04/2007 11:07

I am with them - think I will change now.

nailpolish · 12/04/2007 11:07

actually armadillo, the royal bank of scotland lets you speak to staff in your very own branch if you call them

stitch · 12/04/2007 11:12

in a capitalistic sense, this makes extreme sense.
why bother wasting manpower over a customer you will not be earning much from?
its no different to loyalty schemes. spend more in a store, and you get better service , dont hear anyone complaining about this. so why complain about a bank that only wants to usse resources where it willmake lots of money?
a bank is not a charity, nor any sort of institution out to help its clients. its there to make money.
there si nothing new in this. sso if anyone is suddenly gettting all het up about it, why? this sis the sort tof thing tht hppens all the time.

charliecat · 12/04/2007 11:13

I would think this is the beginning of the end of free banking, you can upgrade and pay for the service of speaking to a cashier, even if you havent got 50 grand in the bank.

zippitippitoes · 12/04/2007 11:16

banks do have a duty to offer accounts to customers who don't have a lot of money to save them from loan sharks

and keep them within the regulated system

especially as the government is making it more dificult to acess payments of benefits from post offices
and also penalties are being introduced to pay bills other than by direct debit

custy · 12/04/2007 11:18

the consumer action group see banks rather differently.

as a utility - such as gas.

Gas isn't a charity either. but its a utility we need.

banks are a utility we need.

it is almost impossible to have a job and not get paid into a bank.
benefits - Post office or bank. and the post offices are closing so lots use bank.

banking is a utility

zippitippitoes · 12/04/2007 11:20

i agree with custy

I started a thread on this too!

TheArmadillo · 12/04/2007 11:20

royal bank of scotland isn't HSBC though - dp works for RBS. They own NAtwest. They've got the customer friendly promotion running.

If I banked with HSBC I would consider moving to a bank that seemed to want my service.

Banks are a business, yes, but they still make money off poorer customers especially if they have loans/overdrafts.

Some people aren't going to want to bank with a company that treats them overtly as second class customers. They will go to another bank that promotes friendly service. They want to know that their bank values them as a customer. HSBC clearly don't unless you have a certain amount of money - so many of those who don't will go elsewhere. I think they will lose quite a bit of business from this.

zippitippitoes · 12/04/2007 11:21

with a few comments

custy · 12/04/2007 11:21

soory zippi i should have searched.

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 12/04/2007 11:22

no no it was in chat..and it was dead!

zippitippitoes · 12/04/2007 11:23

I can't imagine what it is like living in Poole as it makes such a thing of having it's millionaire row

Boco · 12/04/2007 11:24

Shockingly crap behaviour. Dp just changed from HSBC to co-operative.

Dinosaur · 12/04/2007 11:25

I made same switch a few years ago. And had the satisfaction of HSBC sending me grovelling letters to ask what they'd done wrong .

fuzzywuzzy · 12/04/2007 11:26

But there's already a bank for rich people it's called Coutts. I'd far rather write out cheques from Coutts than HSBC if I were incredibly rich.

custy · 12/04/2007 11:29

doesn't mean incredably rich relatively speaking - obv, i could never be a customer, but mortgages over 200k are common.

so wtf is this about other than marketing elitism?

what it is doing is exculding the poorest without property or savings.

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 12/04/2007 11:34

Coutts is a whole different concept

saltire · 12/04/2007 11:35

Custy, your right about it excluding the poorest , what about all these adverts we see for child benefit and pensions being paid into banks, instead of collecting at the PO. What are some people meant to do if they cannot get their CB through the PO and need a bank account!

stitch · 12/04/2007 11:39

custy, i agree with you about the idea that banks are a utility. but i dont think that banks do.
first choice, i cant open an account there coz i dont have 1500 a month going in. so im already feeling very cynical baotu them. i dont think that this move is worse than insisting mimimum amount b e placed in an account.
