Saw a story in today's Times saying that "the heir of sorrows" (Private Eye) is keen to get cracking with the business of becoming King.
He apparently had a bust up with the Queens private secretary back in July, and has pressured the Queen to sack the guy. She has agreed to humour Charles for the sake of a quiet life.
Sounds like Charles is getting somewhat impatient waiting his turn at the top job, but he might be thwarted because She stated categorically that she's Queen for keeps.

When someone rules in place of a monarch who is incapacitated or under 18. The most famous in our history is the Prince Regent who ruled from 1811 to 1820 as Regent for his father, George III before becoming George IV on his father's death. The early 19th century is usually referred to as the Regency period for that reason.

And we have literally no idea of the health status of either the Queen or Charles. For all we know, he's got 14 chronic illnesses and she's got the blood work of a 25 year old.

I'm not sure how true this is, but if a Monarch abdicates, then does that not mean their whole blood line gets dropped too? Which means if the queen abdicates, then the crown would not go to any of her children?

That would arguably make the crown go to David, Lord Snowden, a highly unlikely event. Each abdication requires an act of parliament and it is likely that the result would be, as in other European monarchies recently, that Charles would be king as he is next in succession. An act of parliament would be needed to remove his right to succeed.

James II was actually deposed, but it was treated legally as an abdication. The rights of his Catholic children were removed, but both his daughter Mary (with her husband William) and his daughter Anne became monarch.

"Didn't realise we even had Royal Family section on MN!"

It was introduced, by popular request, so that threads could be together, and so that major events (weddings, births, and idc deaths) do not swamp all topics.

I think it's a great shame it's not used much (though agree a story that BBC has been running this week is also fairly 'In The News'

And I would also suggest that newer MNers who don't know what topics exist on MN take a few minutes to look through the full topic list.

So, on the basis this seems to be a family argument how on earth did a reporter hear about it.
I can't see the Queen summoning her private secretary and saying "Charles thinking I should sack you, but one won't do that".

Sounds like a load of speculation.

Utter bollocks.

I think it's highly likely that Charles won't be king at all; he's not far off 70 now and he might only have another ten years and who knows what his health will be like. If she lives as long as her mother then she's got another 9 or so years.

I wouldn't be surprised in plans were in place for William to be the next king, hence his move to London.

BubblesBuddy · 27/09/2017 20:16

Yes, but with another baby on the way, William and Kate will do less than ever and they do precious little now. Kate managed about 39 days in the first 6 months of the year. It appears they would rather Charles and Camilla step up and leave them to baby duties.

Charles will not be quiet when he is King. He's far too arrogant and self-righteous for that.

Tameagobairanois · 27/09/2017 20:19

I think it's brattish of him to be hoping his mother dies. He's always known the deal. It's not like he doesn't have a role now. It's not like he doesn't have a life. It's not like there'll be any real power that he can use or abuse when he does become King. He should focus on his own health to make sure he gets to be king well in to his old age.
