Prince of Wales making his move?

Saw a story in today's Times saying that "the heir of sorrows" (Private Eye) is keen to get cracking with the business of becoming King.
He apparently had a bust up with the Queens private secretary back in July, and has pressured the Queen to sack the guy. She has agreed to humour Charles for the sake of a quiet life.
Sounds like Charles is getting somewhat impatient waiting his turn at the top job, but he might be thwarted because She stated categorically that she's Queen for keeps.

Discuss?

Bit bossy.

thenightsky · 16/09/2017 23:10

wouldn't surprise me.

As an aside... how do we get this moved to sleb gossip?

123MothergotafleA · 16/09/2017 23:16

Not intending to be bossy, just facetious I suppose.
I thought as the heading is "Topics in the news" that I'm in the right place.

i can wait for king charles, it must be frustrating for him, the queen is about 111

123MothergotafleA · 16/09/2017 23:33

I wonder if Camilla is getting frustrated too?
I don't think the Queen is 111, I think she's early90s, but I take your point Pastacube, she's been going for Ever.
God save the Queen!

I think it's quite possible that Charles will die before the queen anyway

PickAChew · 17/09/2017 19:46

Nah, the Queen's 112, if she's a day.

RabidHarpy · 17/09/2017 19:50

If you would like a peep into the real lives of the royal family, I recommend The Royals on Channel 4.

hate posts that end with discuss

nope

kimlo · 17/09/2017 19:54

I don't think the queen will ever stop being queen. She might pass more of her role over to Charles and William, but she takes it too seriously to give it up completly.

I don't think Camilla is getting frustrated. Who would want to be queen anyway? It looks like it would be a right pain in the arse of a job.

MrsHathaway · 17/09/2017 19:56

HRH has living parents in their 90s, has always had an outdoorsy kind of lifestyle, and hasn't had any major health scares. I doubt he'll be skipped.

I think on the other hand it's very likely he'll take on more of the big royal roles particularly as the DofE has officially retired. He also wouldn't be able to make as many of his borderline-political remarks (eg on the environment) as King so there are benefits to him to waiting.

WipsGlitter · 17/09/2017 20:02

I was wondering about this today. Must be so frustrating waiting basically for your mum to die to fulfil your destiny.

Presumably he'll then hang on until he dies so William will be waiting ages too. Not that I think that will bother him as I don't think he really wants to do it.

I do hope Camilla gets to be Queen. She looks a right laugh.

NashvilleQueen · 17/09/2017 20:05

Those two things aren't necessarily linked even if true. The Queen has always let it be known she won't stand down and that her duty is to reign until her death. I don't actually believe this sorry and I love Private Eye.

Also he isn't expected to be King Charles. It's anticipated he will be King George VII

Butterymuffin · 17/09/2017 20:24

The Queen has said repeatedly she won't abdicate.

thenightsky · 17/09/2017 20:29

I'm not sure how true this is, but if a Monarch abdicates, then does that not mean their whole blood line gets dropped too? Which means if the queen abdicates, then the crown would not go to any of her children?

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 17/09/2017 20:29

Charles doesn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the box, but surely even he can't imagine that he'd win a power struggle with Her Maj? There is literally nobody in the country, with the possible exception of Camilla who would side with him over her.

EdithWeston · 17/09/2017 20:37

"how do we get this moved to sleb gossip?"

You don't, because it isn't the right topic.

And despite many valiant efforts to get people to use 'The Royal Family' topic (which in its heyday had both pro and anti monarchy threads - and very informative ones too) these days no-one uses the topics any more, it seems.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 17/09/2017 20:38

"Also he isn't expected to be King Charles. It's anticipated he will be King George VII"

By whom, these days?

I thought that rumour has been repudiated decades ago.

EdithWeston · 17/09/2017 20:41

"I'm not sure how true this is, but if a Monarch abdicates, then does that not mean their whole blood line gets dropped too?"

No, it doesn't mean that.

Unless they specify (like Edward VIII, who had no DC) that any he had (which had to be putative future Ines) would be outside the line of successions. There is no precedent to drop anyone who has been born and is in the succession at the time of any abdication.

But the Queen won't abdicate. There is nothing whatsoever to indicate she did not mean her 'lifelong' vow.

And there is (Georgian) precedent for a Regency, if she becomes incapacitated.

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 17/09/2017 20:43

Royal Family topic is definitely the right place for "do we like Kate's new shoes? Do we think Eugenia is up the duff? Can we send Liam Neeson in to rescue Princess Charlene?" questions, but "Is the U.K. going to have its first new head of state for sixty years?" would fit equally well in News or Politics.

thenightsky · 17/09/2017 23:30

Didn't realise we even had Royal Family section on MN!

SilverySurfer · 17/09/2017 23:34

The Queen will never abdicate and Chrles will just have to wait his turn.

FuzzyOwl · 17/09/2017 23:41

The Queen might well be ruling when Charles is in his 80s. If so, there is a very good chance that he won't want to take on the full role with all the travel and what that entails.

I can't see the Queen ever abdicating and I doubt Charles would see the crown skip him if he is still alive when his mother dies but it could see a slightly unprecedented situation with William having a bigger role that a new heir would normally have.

VanillaSugar · 17/09/2017 23:49

I've heard that HM is preparing for a Regency when she turns 95.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/09/2017 23:59

What's a Regency?
