Have just cried and cried at this tragic story... keep thinking what an amazingly strong woman she must be to have the fortitude to pick herself up enough to take on these people.

Imagine having to wait 20 months for a simple apology?

Thank you for all your kind words - am trying to get as many people to read this so that things begin to change in the way the NHS treat people and fob them off. Also, so that mothers going into hospital to have their babies are aware that midwives can make mistakes!

When the midwife involved finally realised something was wrong - after only detecting intermittent heart beats for at least 40 minutes, she didn't use the emergency button or call button to summon a doctor. She left the room (!!!) and just got another midwife. My sister has been told by senior staff that if a doctor had been called, the baby could have been delivered within 3 minutes! The midwife involved is still working at Chelsea and received NO disciplinary action - just some retraining.

If you have ANY reason to doubt your midwife during labour - DEMAND A DOCTOR.

wombat, i also had an induced labour effed up by mw's not doing routines procedure on me. i was lucky that my results was not so tragic.

does you know of a campaign we could start that could help your sister's and bil's fight be heard loudly and clearly? I am sure lots of MN would do something to have their voice heard.

retraining, really? dear oh dear... it's a terrible, terrible tragedy. i hope your family finds some peace.

I'm sorry to hear that Kiskidee. I don't know of a campaign - perhaps someone has some suggestions. Sometimes things CAN change if enough people voice their disapproval - we're talking about the needless and senseless death of such a cherished and healthy child.

Any ideas anyone???

Unfortunately the professionals (I was the lay member representative) spent more time in the meetings (around 80% of the time over a 2 year period) talking about the development of the courtyard garden within the maternity unit than real maternity issues - I resigned through frustration and disgust ........ it was a joke

Oh wombat1, your story has me in tears. The same thing happened to my sister in 2002. Her first baby died shortly after birth in similar circumstances, she knew things were'nt going right and her midwife told her to 'be quiet and get back on the bed'!! She then left her for 45 minutes, meanwhile my niece was being starved of oxygen. It took over 18 months for the hospital to issue a 'full apology' along with a substantial amount of compensation. My sister told them where to shove their money.
I am so, so sorry that your family are going through this too.
