Maybe for the same reason that Africa is always made smaller than it actually is on maps?

(Spoke about that with a cartographer a few days ago. The... not sure how to say that in English... scales? Are apparently usually in a way that Africa looks much smaller than it actually is)

Maybe we want to diminish the importance of these countries? Because facing up to what's been going on is just too awful? I'm not sure.

That's because on the maps you are trying to make a sphere into a 2 D representation. The ones closer to the Poles look larger than they are.
