Is it just me or is The Observer a load of shite these days?

I refer in particular to irritating posed photos in 'Food' magazine, the tripe that is rehashed endlessly in the 'Woman' one and their fixation into turning their journalists into 'personalities' (ie Mariella Frostybum,Kathryn Phlegm,Polyfilla
Vernon and that irritating Scot-Euan O'Fergusan-Doonray wotsit.)

Yaaaawn.....

My pa has been buying the Obs for as long as I can remember, but I reckon it's only because he wouldn't be seen dead walking out of the shop with the Sunday Times. He even refuses to buy it for me!

It said it all to me when I attended the Big Chill Festival and it was sponsored by Grauniad/ Observer. Too smug for words.

hellobello · 29/01/2007 19:52

Anyone had a trawl through Sunday Sport recently? I haven't seen it for years. There was a story about a man who denied murdering his wife. He maintained that a giraffe had eaten her and had a picture to prove it. That was about 9 or 10 years ago. I loathe Nigel Slater. Bloody ponce. I find him pretentious and I don't like the way he writes. Makes me want to chunder.

hermykne · 29/01/2007 20:31

well thank yourselve you dont live in ireland, only for the observer, i'd ave zilch to read as the irish sunday papers just copy/reprint everything from the UK ones about 3 wks down the line.

but its karma, i was giving out about one we buy here about 3 wks ago and said to dh i am not buying it anymore, crap articles and badly written and feckin celebs who we dont give a shit about in it, and low and behold 2 wks later it actually carried some integrity.

but i couldnt do without my observer on a sunday.....thou it is skimpier and skimmpier

but they are always congratulating themselves on the readership figures on the front page....

moondog · 29/01/2007 21:30

Bello!!!!
Hot tears are pricking my eyes to hear you speak so disrespectfully of Nigel.
He is one of the few people I adore unreservedly. His cooking style is exactly mine.
I'm not a ponce...just greedy.

Ah, but I pay to download the Sunday Tribune from Ireland every week, just so I can read the Ross O'Carroll Kelly column!

But, yes, a lot of it is complete parp. And as for the Sundsay Tabloids... The Sunday World is possibly THE worst newspaper ever to be printed. I thought the News of The World was bad until I picked up a copy of the Sunday World last time I was home.

hermykne · 29/01/2007 21:34

12yr gap thats the paper i was going to stop reading. and r o carroll - cant stand it

twelveyeargap · 29/01/2007 21:41

It's not for everyone!

Cloudhopper · 29/01/2007 22:01

I was just thinking the same when I came across your thread. The food monthly supplement was an absolute turkey this week - just a load of celebrity interviews dressed up with a food slant. Who cares what celebs eat? Still it made me decide that the celeb culture has reached its apex (is just everywhere) and is about to nosedive.

I too thought that'll be the last time I buy the Observer. The Independent is reasonably witty. Agree that the Times just parades all the things you haven't got (Buying property abroad? etc etc)

The Sat Guardian is def the best weekend paper now.

moondog · 29/01/2007 22:30

I've just written to the Food magazine and told them it is a load of shite.

btw;

The partner of the Saturday Guardian's editor is one of the founder's of Mumsnet.

The Guardian spent £80million pounds on a new printing press for its new berliner format but, have only added 15000 more readers since. Advertising revenue therefore hasn't increased nearly enough to put a dent into this £80m.

moondog · 30/01/2007 10:50

How do I do that aviatrix?

(Btw,always want to tell you that you should really being 'aviatrice' seeing as you are a girly an' all...)

moondog · 30/01/2007 11:05

Is The Observer basically The Guardian? I hate The Guardian so would probably hate this too.

The Times is great, no idea why everyone slags it off.

Where do I remember that name from, Barbara Ellen?

foxinsocks · 30/01/2007 11:13

I didn't realise the editor was Nicola Jeal. I'm sure if you came up with constructive criticism, she'd have a listen (she's very nice).

bundle · 30/01/2007 11:15

olive i wouldn't wipe my cat's arse with the times
