Asad Shah death: Appeal for calm after shopkeeper attack -
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-35904406

Very sad reading this, it seems that Mr Shah was murdered by a fellow Muslim after posting Happy Easter messages. I don't know any more about this, but how sad that someone who believed in tolerance and integration has been murdered for this.

Bill is right. This sort of attack would not cause any surprise in Pakistan. However it is not acceptable here, whether Muslim on Muslim, non Muslim on Muslim, or Muslim on non Muslim.

How can this be understood when it appears there are at least some religious leaders preaching something very different.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 26/03/2016 23:31

originalmavis yy I hope so too.

Keeptrudging · 26/03/2016 23:47

Extremist preachers should have no hiding place here. The damage they can do on impressionable, disaffected young men in particular is huge. It's a nonsense that they can't be immediately expelled. I'm all for people's human rights/right to free speech, but not when they clearly don't give a shit about other people's human rights or right to speak freely.

Its so sad, we lived 5 mins from Mr Shah's shop for 6 years, one of my son's best friends is a paper boy there. Its a wonderfully diverse and tolerant part of the city.

Glasgow is a sad place this weekend, but the city will pull together. Folks are using
#thisisnotwhoweare - and thats very true!

Behooven · 26/03/2016 23:55

Agree with you originalmavis
He seemed a lovely person and a great loss. Extremists out.

sportinguista · 27/03/2016 08:56

A huge loss of a lovely man who sent a wonderful message to his community. Someone who we all need to learn from. I hope his murderers feel the full force of the law and the message spreads that hate and intolerance are against our values.

I too would like to see the damage caused by the hate preachers stopped. We are all human beings under any division we manufacture for ourselves.

NattyGolfJerkin · 27/03/2016 09:01

How awful. His poor family and community, he seemed like a lovely man.

originalmavis · 27/03/2016 09:59

What's the quote about free speech not allowing you to yell 'fire!' In a crowded theatre?

Rights rights rights. Everyone knows their rights but not their responsibilities.

Yes, we live in a country where we have free speech - I really don't care if the attached starts bleating 'ah belong here, ah wuz born here' - sorry mate but your crap ideology (if it proves was as feared) bloody well wasn't. Don't like Christians? Don't like people who do? I suggest you pack your bags then.

You are not who we are. There is no place for you here.

I am so shocked that this happened in my home town. Everyone knows a Mr Shah - lovely, peaceful, open, hardworking man, who talks to everyone, always a smile. A credit to society.

Keeptrudging · 27/03/2016 10:38

Mavis, absolutely. When other's right to freedom of speech might start impacting on the ability of me and my children to enjoy the right to walk about in relative safety and enjoy the freedom for women that were hard won I am extremely concerned. I've always been 'live and let live', but there's no place for extremism in Scotland and I would like laws to be there which allow immediate removal/repatriation of extremists where there is indisputable evidence of it. If the extremists were born and bred here, immediate imprisonment/solitary. Kid gloves off time, this poison needs removed.

But in this 'wonderful' new world on the internet these numpties are broadcasting their bike directly into the bedrooms of the poor wee 'I don't fit in, I don't belong, everybody hates me...' types.

Just show me one teenager anywhere in the world who feels that they do belong, di fit in, are understood or think that the world isn't against them. It will be a short list.

No it's not your religion, colour or Creed. It's your bloody hormones and youthful madness bring played like a bloody banjo by some bastard who wants power and control in this life.

originalmavis · 27/03/2016 11:15

Of course there are extremists of all varistors - you don't have to remember the good old days in Glasgow to recall these!

sportinguista · 27/03/2016 11:32

Extremism in this case may have cost a man his life and his family have been broken apart, their lives irreparably changed. This is a poison that breaks a community and teaches hate. It needs to be stamped out now before more people suffer.

derxa · 27/03/2016 12:27

Very sad about this.

You could say that about any religion and none.

tribpot · 28/03/2016 11:17

Quite. All religions (and philosophies) have extremist adherents who hate those who are more moderate and tolerant.

originalmavis · 28/03/2016 11:31

Except maybe the Quakers. They seem a peaceful lot.

MistressMia · 28/03/2016 13:02

For those who are surprised at British muslim inter sectarian intolerance. This has been going on for years.

The discrimination starts at the top. This is a statement from the Muslim Council of Britain in 2003 on the opening of an Ahmadi mosque (the MCB deleted their original page www.mcb.org.uk/qadiyani-centre-not-mosque/ but it was screen shot qadiyani-centre-not-mosque/

Saif Rahman an ex-muslim blogged about it here:
Unity and Pluralism by Muslim Council of Britain – Unless Ahmadi

And the message is even beamed through into our lounges. The GEO channel is part of the Sky / Virgin package & widely watched in the UK (mostly by women for it's crappy romance dramas).

www.prnewswire.co.uk/news-releases/pakistani-tv-shown-in-britain-promotes-hatred-of-ahmadi-muslims-155479115.html

Ahmadis are not muslims according to the mainstream Sunni muslim majority.

These Sunnis even managed to get a local newspaper, Luton On Sunday, to publicly apologise for running an advert for the Ahmadis because the the Ahmadis had referred to themselves as muslims in the ad !

homoeconomicusnet.wordpress.com/2014/04/08/luton-on-sunday-encourages-islamic-sectarianism/

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 28/03/2016 14:44

It's your bloody hormones and youthful madness bring played like a bloody banjo by some bastard who wants power and control in this life.

It's such a tragedy that a paragon of tolerance has been brutally killed. It also plays into the hands of right-wing extremists because it taps right in to the rhetoric that all Muslims (and we are Muslim btw) are intolerant.

MistressMia · 28/03/2016 14:59

youthful madness ..... really ? The suspect arrested is 32

MistressMia · 28/03/2016 15:03

also plays into the hands of right-wing extremists

There are arguably more right wing muslim fascists who are considerably more dangerous, so perhaps as a muslim you should focus on why they exist and what drove them to do such a thing.

originalmavis · 28/03/2016 15:04

I wasn't talking about the arrested man, but the angry yoof who are prize pickings to have their heads turned.

I suspect the man arrested will have a history of violent crime, drugs, etc. Wasn't brought up in a particularly religious household but 'found' religion as he realised what a loser he is. A suspicious amount of them do.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 28/03/2016 15:11

I had no idea of the sectarianism within the Muslim community.

This attack brought it right to our doorsteps.

It's disgusting his life was ended in this way. He promoted religious tolerance!!!

Rumour is that the attacker drove from Birmingham to commit the crime. Literally fuelled by hate.

Part of me hopes that is true as I would hate to think of people like the attacker living near us.

originalmavis · 28/03/2016 15:12

What the hell goes through the heads of people?

MistressMia · 28/03/2016 15:29

Of course, these are never 'real muslims' motivated by religion.

.....Just like Baghdadi with his doctorate in Islamic studies

Here's a clip of the Mullah's I referred to above on the GEO programme, discussing Ahmadis and declaring them to be Kafirs (unbelievers) and Wajb-e-Katl (liable to death i.e. should be punished by being killed)

www.dailymotion.com/video/x6rjx4_religious-broadcast-by-geo-tv-linke_news (In Urdu - couldn't find an English translation)
