Anyone else heard this? Apparantly the Bishop of Southwark got caught tired and emotional and setting a bad example to binge-Britain.

Call me immature, but . There's something automatically funny about a pissed bish. Especially at this time of year.

BBC has covered it very discreetly here

In years to come, this story about the baby toys may come to rival the baby-eating Bishop of Bath and Wells?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/12/2006 20:05

Am waiting for the hoards of folk to post about how drinking alcohol leaves you open to all sorts of abuse, puts your safety at risk etc etc

Oh no, thats right, he's a bloke, we'll give him a break.

JanH · 11/12/2006 20:05

cod, I think if he had a medical condition he would know about it and would have said so (unless this is the first piss-up of his life).

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/12/2006 20:06

Wouldnt be the first time a clergyman has chucked his toys out his .... vehicle.....

morningpaper · 11/12/2006 20:06

It does compromise your safety

Imagine if a scurrilous journalist came aross him

What if he was mugged?

Or worse....someone bashed him?

Whats the penalty for bashing bishops in public these days?

Mercy · 11/12/2006 20:08

Could be that cod. I think what people find amusing is that generally speaking the clergy tell us lesser mortals how to behave - they are supposed to set an example, they are our moral custodians.

But at the end of hte day they are only human.

MP, his briefcase ended up in the police's hands, via a tabloid news editor's desk!

So much for being mugged??

JanH · 11/12/2006 20:11

Mercy Bishops don't sit around telling people not to drink

In fact I haven't heard a sermon against drunkeness for about 400 years

Christians are allowed to get drunk

He got the injuries when he was thrown out of the car (allegedly)

If I am ever a Bishop this sort of thing will happen to be in about a week and I will be horribly fired

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/12/2006 20:13

Pruni....

I couldnt tell if folk were politely ignoring me or hadnt seen it.....

I just got it

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 11/12/2006 20:15

Pruni - nothing wrong with a bit of anti-fervent-religiosity. If I did think that, I wouldn't read it, would I? I'd get a mind-numbing paper like the Mail or the Telegraph!

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 11/12/2006 20:16

LOL VVQV, I got it, but didn't quite know what to say in response!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/12/2006 20:19

Off with his head?

Whats the bit about "bearing false witness to thy neighbour" about then?????

Does it mean dont steal a babies toys and feign amnesia when caught?

morningpaper · 11/12/2006 20:46

I think it's quite refreshing to have a religious scandal that doesn't involve sex

If only MORE Bishops got drunk

nearlythree · 11/12/2006 20:51

Hope the poor man doesn't lose his job. There are a fair few stinking hypocrites in mitres in the CofE I'd love to see go but he ain't one of them.

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 11/12/2006 20:51

Well, to be fair, we don;t yet know if sex is involved. At least that's the way I read the Guardian coverage.

morningpaper · 11/12/2006 20:52

I think it would be SHOCKING if he lost his job

I can't believe for a moment that that is a serious prospect, it is surely just all the papers getting excited

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 11/12/2006 20:55

He has said he isn't going to resign, and to be honest unless they keep coming up with fresh revelations, they will usually be thrown off the scent within a few days.

Poor guy. I feel very sorry for him, no matter what has happened tbh.

fishie · 11/12/2006 20:57

liked the man who owned the car pointing out it was parked in crucifix lane! i have been to irish embassy parties they are MESSY poor ole bish.
