The average weight of handbags in the UK has reached a back-breaking 3?lbs (1.6kg).
Bags of freedom or a heavy burden?

The article lists various common handbag items including bottle opener and tin opener

Does anyone carry a tin opener??

i only have in my bag
keys
phone
deodrant
chewing gum
inhalers
and that's it

JackieNo · 15/11/2006 13:26

I have a large and very heavy bag, which contains, among many, many other things, some shoe chains in case it gets icy underfoot. (I'm in the UK, btw - it's not like I live anywhere particularly cold). Oh well.

Hmmmm....

I have two bags, one for spring/summer - one for winter. (Had both for 10 plus years, too....how boring!)

My winter one contains...

loose change
broken and mashed biscuit
toy car
coupons
much used tissue
London A - Z
small wallet with loads of receipts - no money
legos
biscuit encrusted ballpoint pen
lip gloss

Sad, eh?

belgianmama · 19/11/2006 10:59

I've got a big multi purpose bag as I was fed up with changing between uni-placement-every day bags therefore I have in my bag the usual stuff such as:

purse
keys
diary
make up bag
a hairbrush
phone
cheque book
tissues
a pen
spare sanitary pad

But there's also:
a notebook
odd bits of receipts, empty envelopes & credit card bills I'm hiding from my DH!
nappies & wipes
breakfast bar
a small photo album to show off my lo's
my placement evaluation hand book
chewing gum
an umbrella
knickers
sea bands

Boy I didn't realise how much I carry around! (Almost) all useful though! I'm sure mine must be more than 3 pounds!

poppiesinaline · 19/11/2006 11:22

No handbag for me either so I win too

Keys in my pocket and thats it

When I go out I also have a lip gloss in my pocket

In the summer when I have no coat I may have to succumb to a very small bag in which to put my keys and lip gloss which is very annoying

I have a small backpack type handbag for those days when I am wearing clothes without large enoughpockets. (My bunch of work keys is huge!)

I have carry swiss army knife with a tin opener. Does that count?

themoon66 · 21/11/2006 12:16

I've got loads in my handbag, which is a small backpack, so I don't end up lop-sided.

My granny could beat all comers with the weight of her bag... she had 5 pairs of scissors, 3 purses (1 for brown money, 1 for silver money and one for paper money), plus a heavy lead crystal whisky tumbler!

MrsOhHu · 24/11/2006 20:15

Well, my bag weighs a ton with nothing in it! I don't carry it unless I really have to and then it's full of all sorts of stuff - nappies, purse etc, then books, camera, sketchbook, pencils, prob a knife of sorts to sharpen pencils, a rubber, probably a leaky biro, some dog treats (stale) and things I haven't seen for ages!

MarsLady · 24/11/2006 20:18

I have:

A change of clothes and underwear
A towel
A couple of books
Some cereal bars
2 diaries (2006 and 2007)
2 note books
My nano
Some pens
My purse
and a packet of tissues

MarsLady · 24/11/2006 20:19

Ooh yes and my A-Z
Mobile phone
Keys
And assorted school letters most days

WideWebWitch · 24/11/2006 20:24

I have

my purse containing ONE card only (I thought I'd lost my purse yesterday and the thought of cancelling everything made me weep so I have pared it down to one card), a plaster and some cash
make up bag (foundation, tweezers, mascara, eye drops, eyelash curlers, touche eclat)
moisturiser
glasses in case
a packet of mints
mobile phone
photo of children
a tt form
payslip
salt sachets
tampons
keys
work photo pass

WideWebWitch · 24/11/2006 20:25

oh and a comb

fizzbuzz · 24/11/2006 21:14

Once pulled a cheque book out of handbag. Attatched to it was a long piece of sellotape, which had come unrolled. Attatched to the sellotape was also: 2 tampons, partly unwrapped, a mouldy sweet, unidentified pieces of paper, various receipts, a pen, bits of shredded tissue (I had a cold at the time), small change, a piece of penne pasta (uncooked), and lots of gravel/dust.
The cashier managed to maintain a straight face...

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2006 21:16

Oooh, poppiesinaline, please join the "no handbag" clique! It's just me, Avalon and (hopefully) you, so it's very exclusive.

PeachyClair · 24/11/2006 21:23

My humungus bag has an a4 pad, 4 pens, a Qur'an, bible, uni handbook, employment handbook for the one day a week I work, three files, a HUGE work record pad, last terms notes a fork and a half drunk bottle of water

I carry it all as I have no memory and would lose it all otherwise

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2006 21:25

Ok. I'm going to ask. You have no memory, so you must carry a fork?

PeachyClair · 24/11/2006 21:30

I took it for lunch one day and forgot to take it out, see?

Just checked....a lso empty but dirty Princess lunch box with salad remnants in

xena · 24/11/2006 21:37

Peachyclair are you doing a religous degree?
My bag changes all the time- but why do some parents take BIG handbags to do the school run?

PeachyClair · 24/11/2006 21:40

LOL how did you guess?

At least my copy of the Dhammapada is an e-book LOL

Linnet · 24/11/2006 22:06

In my bag I have...

my mobile phone
my purse
a small hairbrush
work pass
two folded up carrier bags
lip salve
house keys
perfume
2 handcreams
small deoderant
compact mirror
sunglasses
3 pens
lip gloss
packet of tissues

That's my work bag, I switch between that and a small rucksack on my days off so I transfer between them but when moving to the rucksack I only transfer my purse, phone and keys.
I'm actually trying to find a small leather rucksack that I can use for work but can't find one I like.
