member · 21/10/2014 09:44

There was no indication from either side that an appeal would be mounted but they have 14 days to do so

ilovechristmas1 · 21/10/2014 09:49

5yrs prison

Territt16 · 21/10/2014 09:51

He will be out within 10Months.

ilovechristmas1 · 21/10/2014 09:52

really,a bloody disgrace

hackmum · 21/10/2014 09:53

Yes, it is a disgrace. At least there will be a custodial sentence, but the idea of him being out in 10 months is shocking.

JillJ72 · 21/10/2014 09:54

I think Judge Masipa addressed all criticisms, all concerns, and followed the law. I think I said 5 years.

No amount of sentencing will bring back Reeva. I hope her parents are able to find some very small comfort that all attempts to keep him out of prison were dismissed, and that he will serve time for his actions.

5 years. According to Sky even if he doesn't appeal chances are he will serve less than half of that.
He will also have access to his drs.

JillJ72 · 21/10/2014 09:59

Why out in 10 months? The judge said this sentence will not be suspended. I don't understand.

Where did you get 10 months from? The Telegraph says 3 years - he get's 1/3 off as a first time offender and could get extra time off for good behaviour

squatcher · 21/10/2014 10:04

He has to serve 1/6th of the sentence before being considered for house arrest (so, around 10 months): www.theguardian.com/world/live/2014/oct/21/oscar-pistorius-sentencing-prison-live

member · 21/10/2014 10:06

Under section 276, 1/6 of sentence can be served before assessment takes place. As a result of assessment, he could be placed under house arrest after 10 months

BookABooSue · 21/10/2014 10:17

member thanks for your updates. I only caught snippets on BBC as I was driving. Does anyone have a link to a summary of this morning's session?

I think 5 years was appropriate on the basis that the judge considered his actions reckless rather than deliberate. (I still struggle with that ruling but the law seems to make it difficult to prove anything else when the only other party is dead).

I hope it isn't reduced to 10 months - that doesn't seem enough and also doesn't seem like any kind of deterrent. If that happened and I was in a DV relationship in SA then I'd feel very frightened.

WhatWouldCaitlinDo · 21/10/2014 10:18

This is so depressing. He should have got a murder verdict with 20 years or similar, but the prosecution did a crap job and the judge gave the only verdict she could. At least he's getting a custodial sentence.

He will totally be out for the Rio Olympics, write a book, do talk shows, etc.

Poppies26 · 21/10/2014 10:24

Para Olympics committee are not allowing OP to compete after his sent ace is finished.

member · 21/10/2014 10:25

He'll be under house arrest/under correction services supervision so won't be competing in Rio or doing talk shows until 2019

JillJ72 · 21/10/2014 10:27

BBC also now quoting 10 months and the rest as house arrest. They also say the Steenkamps 'are relieved justice has been served'.

OP posts:
Territt16 · 21/10/2014 10:29

5 years seems about right, he didn't mean to kill her, it was an accident.

OneStepCloser · 21/10/2014 10:34

I think his career is well and truly over, I mean in order to be a top athlete you have to train every day etc... He has also lost all credibility now. Would countries allow him a Visa to participate in a meet?

Im unsure of the sentence, in fact the whole trial. Im glad of our own justice system, although it is not always correct I think it is better than that of SA. It has been a long drawn out affair which has been so hard on all involved.

Bewooohooove · 21/10/2014 10:39

If 5 years meant 5 years in prison I would be more comfortable with the sentence. 10 months for what he did, well it isn't enough IMO.

BookABooSue · 21/10/2014 10:41

I'm not sure his career is over. Sport has been his defining achievement. I think he will try very hard to return to that world in some capacity.

I just read an update which included an interview with an inmate from the prison OP will likely be transferred to. They were saying he'll be treated very well, the other inmates will protect him and do stuff for him. tbh it made me sick to read how the other inmates will be doing everything to make it easy for him. They're already acting like he's a hero because he's famous and rich. Disrespectful idiots.
