I don't vacuum often enough to think about the wattage of my vacuum cleaner, it's an utter storm in a teacup. Our old vacuum was less than 900 watt and worked perfectly well.

I say that as many things, including men, whether in a political party or not, do NOT perform as well as boasted ‘on the tin’.

Your 900 watt may well have been ahead of it’s time, may not have lost any suction power, and you may be very clean ‘human beans’ – but I’d also guess that if you did get a 1600 watt, that was a 1600 watt, it might change your world. lol

I'm not an anorak, I'm a slob. Our old sub-900 watt was an antiquity you couldn't even get the bags for. Our current Dyson is much better - I have no idea what wattage is is, but not 1600 - and it makes the house perfectly clean enough. No-one in our house has dust allergies, there just isn't a problem.

However, I do agree with claig that this is an utterly stupid idea, because people with 1) higher standards than mine and 2) allergic family members will need to vacuum for longer to reach the same standard of cleanliness, thus using more energy and more bags too. It's completely self-defeating.

On the other hand I can't help thinking that without the EU, rules on how employees are treated in the UK and elsewhere in Europe would be a lot less good, there would be no safety standards for toys that you could trust and we would still not be recycling anything like as much as is possible and sensible - they are not all bad. The organisation badly needs major reform, though.

Maybe if Dyson didn’t have a million patents on their technology, all the others could achieve a similar result for less power, but in the meantime …… maybe buy Dyson shares, never mind vacuum stocks while last? lol

I had no idea they were so unreasonable about their patenting... Guess that patent law has its drawbacks.

Sadly I only bought the Dyson because it was on offer and was small enough to fit into our tiny hall cupboard, no clever vacuum buying here.

Perhaps this is an international conspiracy between Dyson and the EU to have Dyson corner the vacuum market? (Disclosure: DD2 has coined the phrase 'international conspiracy' to mean 'anything that gets on her nerves' such as having to get up in the morning).

I think you'd be surprised how much 'stuff' is covered by patent, including drugs, hence so many lawyers make a living - and if such rights couldn't be protected, few companies would be encouraged to spend so much time and shareholder money on Research and Development.

FYI it is not rare for one company to buy another for the value of it's patents, rather than the companies business.

It's fair enough really - if you invent something great, you should get the rewards. Unfortunately there are only so many ways to make a machine that sucks dust up from floors. So if companies buy up other companies for their patents, could we see an international vacuum cleaner company conspiracy to buy up Dyson? (Yes, I know I'm being silly)

I'm sure any large investor i.e. pension fund, Private Equity or Hedge Fund, is looking at the potential financial/market share dynamics of this, or any EU vacuum head-up-bum dictat - the others just have to adapt with their new whirlygigs, or lose market share.

But you can imagine that German and French vacuum makers won't be best pleased that THEIR EU, might be giving an advantage to a British manufacturer, ever - especially if we are not fully indoctrinated into the program.

I don't entirely agree with your anti-EU rhetoric, but I do think that if people want market share, they have to make the best product. Are there even any French vacuum cleaners? And the Germans are good at cars and washing machines so they have nothing to complain about.

The French company SEB makes Moulinex and Rowenta, but to be honest, for some reason (maybe it sounds French) I often think Miele was, but I should know better as we used to have one and it seemed bullet proof and even when put it out to grass, it was still working and used in for years as a car vacuum.

In France Dyson I believe is just the leading vacuum brand, with about 16% of the market.

Moulinex used to be a decent brand of kitchen equipment (food processors and so on) and Rowenta did bigger appliances - but my mum had one of theirs in the 80s and it was shit. Go figure.

Well, I love my Dyson. It totally does the job to the point where it swallows things I need to retrieve later .

The EU needs to find a balance between being solely concerned with trade - which wouldn't do workers' rights any good - and running people's lives. Messing about with vacuum cleaners is going too far. And like too many politicians the world over, they are utterly crap at unintended consequences. The problem is that people with common sense don't go into politics. Because they have too much common sense for that.

It is only the start. Fridges are next and then washing machines until a mangle is in every kitchen again. Their green plan will step up another gear. It is deliberate, done to make life more difficult for ordinary people.

There is an answer, it is Farage at the helm of UKIP. The green dragon will be slayed one day and ordinary people will again be free, but it will be one hell of a battle and Farage will need one hell of a lot of pints to make it.

claig I have massive, massive problems with your anti-green agenda and conspiracy theories. This is NOT a zero-sum game where it's a choice between 'pollute as you like' and 'back to Victorian technology'. You must surely know that. Straw man arguments never win. I am in favour of making machines which are both energy-efficient and effective. That is what people want to buy and ultimately the markets will still decide.

I'd quite like there to be a habitable planet left for my grandchildren and beyond, so technology does need to take finite natural resources into account.
