"New EU rules 'will outlaw best models in 10 days because they're not eco-friendly'

www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/news/article-2730642/Buy-powerful-vacuum-cleaner-BANNED-New-EU-rules-ban-best-models-September-warns-Which.html

What next? There wil undoubtedly be more to come in the years that follow.
Hopefully UKIP will have something to say about this.

Flowers to the EU. I just got £100 worth of hoover from tesco for £39, I'm assuming that's as its above the allowed suction? Grin

claig · 25/08/2014 18:06

Wow, just went on Tesco website and there are some huge reductis, but not sure if it is to do with this.

Even the Guardian has an article about this

"EU ban on powerful vacuum cleaners prompts anger and legal challenge

Which? tells consumers to buy now as Best Buy cleaners fall foul of EU energy label that prohibits motors above 1,600w"

...

"The consumer group [Which] argues that the move is self-defeating – claiming that householders would simply use the less powerful models for longer to achieve the same degree of cleaning.

The move has also angered manufacturers who agree the move will do nothing to make cleaners more environmentally friendly and will simply reduce efficiency in the home."

www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/21/anger-as-eu-bans-most-powerful-vacuum-cleaners

And as expected, UKIP has had something to say about this. Don't expect the other parties to say much about this. This legislation has been on the cards for ages and they have not stopped it and of course they will not stop the future steps in the climate plan either.

"Ukip rallies 'house-proud Brits' over EU vacuum ruling "

"But the move has angered Ukip MEP Louise Bours, who said it acts against the interest of "house-proud Brits" as she urged consumers to buy the remaining models that exceed the 1,600-watt limit.

"This is being done in the name of tackling climate change but the reality is it will do nothing to help and just make life harder for house-proud Brits."

"How dare the European Commission dictate which machines we can or can't use," she added. "In every walk of life our choices are increasingly limited by these faceless bureaucrats."

'The measures will also be extended to appliances, including water heaters and tumble dryers.'

Yup, knew it. You can read them like a book.

I don't see anything about water heaters and tumble dryers in that link, claig...

And alongside the silly ideas (the olive oil and vacuum cleaner ones as well as possibly the perfume one), the best before label makes sense: It applies to a lot of products which are perfectly fine to use or eat after this date. It means that householders can use their own common sense Shock to decide whether a product is still OK. Labelling is always a good idea - I like to know what I'm eating and drinking, don't you? And trying to preserve fish stocks so that our kids can still have anchovies on their pizza if they want doesn't seem to be a problem to me either. DM at its hysterical worst again.

claig · 25/08/2014 19:12

'I don't see anything about water heaters and tumble dryers in that link, claig...'

Hidden away just 4 lines above the bottom panel about olive oil and Chanel No 5

Without the DM we would be lost, the "faceless bureaucrats" that UKIP MEP Louise Bours mentioned would be sneaking stuff past the public like there was no tomorrow.

With the DM and UKIP, we can sleep easy knowing that someone is keeping an eye on what is going on.

'the best before label makes sense'

I don't like it. I've got tins and cans and packets and bottles at the back of cupboards that look like they came from Noah's Ark. Are they still safe? Is a ten year bottle of oil still OK? I'm not an expert, that's why I rely on experts to label stuff for me.

Put use by labels on every item, but say that something is safe for 10 years or forever if it is, but spell it out for the sake of the public and for the sake of public health, not to save pennies for faceless bureaucrats who pretend they are "saving the planet".

Does anyone know if this EU law about wattage for vacuum cleaners which will only allow a maximum of 900W in 2017 just applies to vacum cleaners sold to the hardworking public who pay for the bureaucrats or will it also apply to industrial vacuum cleaners used by commercial cleaners and industrial enterprises?

Some poor old frail pensioners of 90 may have to take longer pushing a vacuum cleaner around their homes because it doesn't have the suction power of the higher wattage models.

OP posts:
pointythings · 25/08/2014 20:36

On the other hand some overweight housewives might be able to give up their gym membership because they'll get so fit from trundling their pathetic vacuum cleaners around their homes.

(Just joining in the whataboutery, obviously not serious)

We bought a relatively cheap Bosch cylinder BSG 71266 some years back after our Meili, on a recommendation by Which?, as it said on suction power/cleaning it was way up there with the best and with other features e.g. anti allergy & pets (we don’t have) hairs, as well.

Reading the last few comments I had to laugh as although it has a large dust bag that Which said the vacuum hardly lost any power when near full, when I change the bag, as my old grandad used to say, ‘it could suck the chrome off of a trailer hitch’ - and takes twice as long to finish due to the resistance using and disengaging from the floor.

This Bosch I believe is no longer made, did not have the watt power on it, I just assumed 1600, but according to the internet, it’s an 1800 - so while I’d be one of the first up against the EU wall when they fully take over - I’m sure my granddad would have approved. lol

The ink is hardly dry on their recent victory in their green plan, when the green plan is already stepped up another gear.

"The European Union is considering pulling the plug on high-wattage hair dryers, lawn mowers and electric kettles in a follow up to its controversial ban on powerful vacuum cleaners.

The power of hairdryers could be reduced by as much as 30 per cent in order to be more eco-friendly, a draft study commissioned by Brussels suggests, threatening many of the models favoured by hairdressers and consumers for speedy blow-dries.

New proposals are expected next spring to outlaw dozens of household electrical devices that European officials regard as using too much electricity, as part of plans to meet EU targets on energy efficiency.

Current EU legislation covers televisions, washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners but not most smaller electrical appliances.

A study ordered by the European Commission, currently in draft form, has identified up to 30 electrical appliances including lawn mowers, smart phones and kettles that could be covered by the EU's Ecodesign directive outlawing high-wattage devices.

Günther Oettinger, the German EU energy commissioner, said that legislation preventing consumers from buying high-wattage appliances was necessary to fight climate change.

"We haven't got round to these devices yet, we want curb power consumption," he told Bild newspaper. "All EU countries agree that energy efficiency is the most effective method to reduce energy consumption and dependence on imports and to improve the climate. Therefore there needs to be mandatory consumption limits for small electrical appliances."

Don't expect Cameron and the modernisers to do anything about it. They can't, the green plan is way above their heads.

Hopefully, UKIP will have something to say about this!

Claig ….. “Hopefully Ukip will have something to say about this”

Well they wouldn’t have the first clue how to run a country, so they have to expel hot air at great speeds about SOMETHING populist.

All those Ukip votes putting Ukip MEP’s in the heart of European legislation lands at such great taxpayer expense, and they cannot change or influence A THING, from immigration to air suction, watt, watt, watt.

In technical vacuum airflow terms, they are LESS influential than a duck bottom burp, in windy weather.

BreakingDad77 · 01/09/2014 15:05

I don't see anything wrong with moves to not use unnecessary electricity and hopefully this will drive innovation.

My problem is with the privatised energy sector where efficiency savings mean a bonus for the CEO not cheaper bills. I believe it should be nationalised and profit goes into development, innovation and maintenance not some foreign companies pockets.

claig · 02/09/2014 17:29

Pam Ayres is on the case.

Can't see a problem with it. Reducing our energy consumption isn't exactly a novel concept is it?

I said "Hopefully, UKIP will have something to say about this" and I have not been disappointed.

Apparently toasters and kettles are now seeing an increase in sales too as fears rise over the next stage in the green plan.

Has the government said anything about this or is it just UKIP objecting?

'UKIP has blamed the sales rush on the EU, with deputy leader Paul Nuttall attacking ‘nannying Eurocrats’ for interfering in family life.

The MEP for the North West said: ‘The lunatics running the asylum are now contemplating banning high wattage household devices such as hair dryers, kettles and smartphones.

‘Not content with the ridiculous prohibition on vacuum cleaners the Brussels bureaucrats have their eyes set on about 30 other electrical items.’

The UK government has given its backing to the EU plans to promote energy efficient appliances in the home.'

Good. I'm glad the EU is sensibly following a green plan, unlike the UK.

Its an unbelievable joke.

Dirt is dirt, people will clean longer to get the dirt up!

Their green plan steps up yet another gear - lawnmowers now.
But, fortunately, UKIP, alone of all the parties, has something to say about this.

"As well as small gardening and handheld equipment, bigger off-road equipment including excavators, bulldozers and crop harvesters, as well as railcars, locomotives and inland waterway vessels such as river barges are also in the Brussels executive’s sights.

‘These people are fanatics,’ said Paul Nuttall, Ukip Euro MP for the north-west of England.

‘They are so blind to their own failings that they do not even realise the contempt which their hyperactivity breeds in the voting public. They just need to stop, take a deep breath and take a look at themselves.’
