Eh no, baby girl dies tragically in her mothers arms.

I don't see what the problem with it is.

It never actually said "breastfeeding killed baby."

It'd be just the same as man dies after running a marathon - he might have died due to it or he might just have been happy at having completed it & died of natural causes.

If people are stupid enough just to take the title and think oh breastfeeding killed a baby, then that is their own fault - they should read the rest of the article to find out what really happened.

throckenholt · 27/07/2006 19:21

to my mind it is a non-story - why was it reported anyway ? It is tragic and heartbreaking for the family and a terrible thing for the mother to go through - but not news. It offers nothing about what causes SID, or how to avoid it (if that is possible).

Basically it is a sad fact of life but really not newsworthy.

And I agree - once they had decided to run it - the headline was totally inappropriate. But maybe they could not think of any more relevant headline ?

moondog · 27/07/2006 19:29

Fuckwits
Have sent suitably outraged missive.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 27/07/2006 19:30

Its not the same as a man dropping dead after running a marathon BL.

The coroner stated the baby died of "natural causes" there was no ambiguity about it. THe headline suggests otherwise.

hunkermunker · 27/07/2006 22:22

Still bloody there as the headline

hunkermunker · 28/07/2006 10:47
Angry
NotQuiteCockney · 28/07/2006 10:57

It's not the same as the marathon thing, because, looking at the story, you can see the bf wasn't related. Although, the story doesn't explicitly say as much. Nor does it point out that BF reduces the risk of SIDS.

But if you just see the headline, it looks like bf caused the death.

WankyMcWank · 28/07/2006 10:58

Yeah and a lot of people would just see the headline, thats the problem

NotQuiteCockney · 28/07/2006 10:59

Absolutely.

And the headline really sticks in your head.

(Lovely name, btw.)

WankyMcWank · 28/07/2006 10:59

Thanks notquitewanky

NotQuiteCockney · 28/07/2006 11:03

Hmmm.

hunkermunker · 28/07/2006 21:04

Anyone on the ranty formula thread want to get their knickers in a twist about journos saying breastfeeding kills babies?

CorrieDale · 28/07/2006 21:46

Just complained. First time ever to the beeb. I have lost my cherry!!!!

hunkermunker · 28/07/2006 22:07

I've just complained again.

This headline remains the same (Baby Girl Dies After Breastfeed), despite numerous complaints. Please can you alter it to reflect that breastfeeding had nothing to do with the tragic death of this baby girl. Otherwise why not introduce some other random misleading fact into the headline - perhaps you'd like to say "Baby girl dies after visit to mosque"...no? Thought not...

donnie · 28/07/2006 22:18

Best tell moondog.

hunkermunker · 28/07/2006 23:06

Did you read the thread, Donnie?

1Baby1Bump · 28/07/2006 23:15

how stupid is the bbc title?!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 29/07/2006 01:00

No, hunker, I believe Donnie was off reading the proliferation of threads where extended breastfeeders castigate those who choose not to do the same. Or something.

Have complained a third time this morning....

I am disappointed to find that you have still not changed the title of the above news report.

Furthermore, I have seen no response to my previous two complaints. I think your handling of this whole matter has been shoddy to say the least, starting with the appalling journalism and ending with your inadequacy at dealing with complaints.

I find this whole debacle truly shocking.

hunkermunker · 29/07/2006 15:02

mimitwo, do you think I'm trying to wind people up?! Think you've got hold of the wrong end of the stick there

(I've just complained for the third time too)

donnie · 29/07/2006 19:53

hunker - yes I did read the thread and also read Moondog's thread which so incensed me I posted my admittedly rather flippant comment below.

FWIW I agree that this article is ridiculous and does imply that the child died BECAUSE she was bfing. Well done for complaining!

hunkermunker · 30/07/2006 19:22

Still bloody there.

Caligula · 31/07/2006 09:05

I got this reply back this morning:

Dear Caligula
Thank you for your e-mail

I understand that you feel that a report on the death of an infant was biased against breastfeeding. However as you have not provided a link to the story it is difficult to respond in any detail. Should you wish to confirm the webpage we will certainly investigate further.

Nevertheless, rest assured that your comments will be fully registered on a daily log, which is made available to senior news management. Feedback of this nature helps us when making decisions about future BBC programmes and services and your comment will play a part in this process.

Thank you again for contacting the BBC.

Regards
