Something bad happens and suddenly all these racist remarks on facebook

I feel terrible about what happened to that poor soldier. I was so shocked when I heard about it on the radio.

But why do people immediately start posting racist status updates starting with 'I'm not racist, I'm not against immigration' and then posting videos entitled 'Islamic infiltration in the UK'

I am going to get into rows with people over this and probably should delete my account.

Why do people think this type of terrorism has anything to do with Islam and why do people think we should start 'weeding out' people who do this. Terrorists don't even have to be residents of a country to carry out an attack.

I have a few now ex friends posting froma page

Stunned is not the word.

MiniTheMinx · 22/05/2013 22:25

er.....so you think I am blaming Islam. Really, read again.

I am blaming Western Imperialism. So yes I do feel that OUR government must take its share of the responsibility.

And yes our government is more than happy to blame it on Islam and have everyone else do the same.

lottieandmia · 22/05/2013 22:26

It's depressing. I've posted a few thinks to counter the ignorance.

MiniTheMinx · 22/05/2013 22:31

Yes it is depressing, especially combined with the rise of support for UKIP, Cameron's blathering about immigration, Osborne's crap about austerity making Britain great and half the Tories wanting out of Europe.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/05/2013 22:42

Mines is mostly racist crap (friends talking on friends of friends status'), it seems no one has pointed out to them that the man in the video (judging by his accent) is quite obviously English. Hmm

Thankfully though, I have far more reasoned, level headed people posting. The best so far has been a massive post from a soldier friend talking about Muslim soldiers and

nailak · 22/05/2013 22:53
worth watching
ChasingStaplers · 22/05/2013 22:53

I've just posted a status summing up what I think about what's happened and the ensuing bigotry.

Luckily I've only seen a couple of posts that made me angry such as: 'I'm not racist but . . . If you don't like it go home' and such bollocks. Angry

doubleshotespresso · 22/05/2013 23:15

nailak Thank-you, I have just shared this on my faceache page.....

Pan · 22/05/2013 23:26

Well, lets face it - any act at all will easily trigger people who are xenophobic and racist to post their bilge at the slightest invitation.

The obv trick is to not allow their sort of hatred against millions and millions of people to infect them and those around them. Such individuals are quietly disturbed, in a similar way the attackers are blatantly disturbed. Lets keep the hatred in the tiny box it deserves to be.

ivykaty44 · 22/05/2013 23:28

At some point you will have to face the fact they we are being targeted by Islamic terrorists.

At some point did we have to face the fact they we are being targeted by ira terrorists who were being funded by north americans and catholic?

the answer to both is a resounding no

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 22/05/2013 23:34

Schro I had to point that out to a few. When in the video he says Where I'm from etc I was thinking you are from London, wtf you talking about?!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/05/2013 23:41

SP I've posted on FB saying it and have now ended up in an argument.

The racism isn't slowing down, it's getting worse.

ivykaty44 · 22/05/2013 23:47

it si a blame game- lets blame 10% of the population for all that is wrong with this country, instead of working out what would make this ocuntry better these people want to blame less than 1% of the population for eveything that is going wrong.

It isn't logical it is lazy thinking, it is stupidity at its most dangerous Sad

nailak · 22/05/2013 23:52

sp i have to point out I have friends who were born in somalia, they may have came over here as kids aged 4 or 5 but the time before that they remember, and the stuff they remember if you ever get them to talk about it and admit it is awful. So although for all intents and purposes they are from London, they can still identify with war torn countries.

feeltheforce · 23/05/2013 00:00

Re OP - this type of terrorism has EVERYTHING to do with Islamism I'm afraid. It's a political ideology based on faith and provoked by a clash with western values. Doesn't make every muslim a terrorist anymore than every Catholic supported the IRA. However, when that group don't show their strong opposition to what is done in their name then all are tarred with same brush.

Pan · 23/05/2013 00:08

Well that's utter bollocks feeltheforce - those people short of thinking skills will see your sense, and insist other muslims make statements, when thier own good sense should make the need for those 'statements' irrelevant.

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 23/05/2013 00:14

Nailak I said that was my thought due to his accent. He was saying how he apologises for women seeing it here but women see it in his country. This is his country. I have used this on FB when people have been saying send immigrants back home etc that he is in fact home.

He killed an innocent man and that's his excuse?! His reasoning is it happens in a another country? He might use religion as an excuse as well but no. He is an evil man no matter where he is from or what religion he believes.

nailak · 23/05/2013 00:45

the thing is it is our country, until people start telling us otherwise, then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy is you see what i mean, even on mumsnet, in every single one of these threads, i have to say hold on this is our country, what you mean muslims should go somewhere else if they dont like it etc, i have had people telling me if i wear scarf i am seperating myself from society etc, so some people feel allegiance to two countries, is not a big deal.

lottieandmia · 23/05/2013 01:21

One of the haters on my page did a bit of a U turn status after what I posted.

Another is banging on about we should take a leaf out of Australia's book. They can speak for themselves!!

Barbarashop · 23/05/2013 01:32

Ahhhh - can't do it!!!

KRITIQ · 23/05/2013 01:37

I'm so glad I don't have Facebook. I don't want to know that my second cousin's husband more a colleague I worked with 3 jobs ago is a racist arse. I don't think my blood pressure could take it.

I think sadly there are alot of folks out there who do harbour racist, islamaphobic and other bigoted views, even if they don't broadcast the fact all the time. They are on the "alert" for examples that support their views because these give them a sort of "permission" to be more candid in talking about what they believe. I certainly don't believe that today, thousands of folks suddenly turned into bigots because of one (albeit terrible) murder. The incident has simply flushed them out from their cover and because they are hearing/seeing so many voices that concur with theirs, they feel more emboldened in their bigotry.

Having said that, I manage the works Twitter feed and have been heartened that so many folks are prepared to call out the ridiculous and biased reporting from some mainstream media and calling for solidarity with and amongst Muslims and people of colour. Okay, maybe we follow people whose knuckles don't drag the ground (so to speak,) but I also don't think we can completely take a gauge of public opinion just based on the tiny proportion of the population who use social media.
